Town Hall Continued original jail. Council met in the building and it was used for town meetings and vaud- ville shows. After the devastating fires of 1882 and 1884 the Town Hall was one of the few build- ings on downtown Queen Street which remained. In it the townsfolk met after the fire to lay plans to begin again building Port Perry. In October of 1886 the Toronto Mail and Empire published a feature story on Port Perry which said in part, "The public buildings and better class of private residences are exceptionally fine, notably so in the case of the schools and the town hall." From the time a new municipal building was opened on Perry Street until last year the town hall was rented for use as a corset factory. During the past year Port Perry Hydro has used it as a storage shed. Hydro has since built a new shed on the 7th concession of Ward 1. Last year council ob- tained an engineers report indicating that the building would be expensive to re- store and probably not feasi- ble. Council called for an estimate on demolition. However, private citizens called in a second engineer who produced a slightly dif- ferent report. It was decided to hold off demolition until further study could take: place. - Last week council decided it could not afford to spend that much on an old building, so it was decided not to accept any of the contract- ors offers. On February 18 Miss Christie and Mr. Bill Brock both asked "or more time to study the buildings possibil- ities. Council made no decision.
