Pogue had a fascin- ating story for the children, about a 7 year old boy who always covered his eyes. when he did not wish to see the results of his mistakes. The conclusion was that many of us do the same tho' not literally. The adult sermon was from the 8th chapter of John, part of which has occasion- ally been left out of modern translations because of some _question re its authenticity. But is now concluded that the story really happened and the Pharisees wished to cor- ner Jesus in the reply. he must make. But after some consideration, Jesus direc- tions led each one to open his eyes re his own faults. Our lenten period is a time of _ when we examine our short comings and ask forgive- ness. Some never admit their faults and therefore receive no forgiveness. At a miceting of Elders and Stewards after church we hope to be informed of visitation plans next Sunday. There will be a special dedication order of Service for the 3 new Stewards. Haugen's "Sais Chicken Bar - B -Q WILL BE Lilla Street provides The proposed widening of Lilla Street provoked a lengthy and heated discus- sion at the Ratepayers Meet- ing last Thursday. The crowd of over 80 . . heartily and unanimously opposed any widening of the north-south road through Port Perry. The centre of the dis- cussion zeroed in on the problems created by widen- ing such a road as Lilla Street. Dr. Bill Cohoon out- lined the dangers of paving the road beyond two lanes. "This only through traffic which is of no benefit to the Community" he said. The major concern to all ratepayers at the meeting was the effect a 4 lane artery would have on the commun- ity. Dave Muir said that it's effect would be to split the entire village in two. Stop lights at Lilla and Queen would be a necessary next step. One ratepayer likened Port Perry's problem of Lilla and 7A to that of Markham with it's inter- section of 48 and 7, ten years ago. 'That intersection in Markham has virtually des- troyed the entire town. Four lanes right up the Main Street. What we need here in Port Perry is something 'which Markham should have looked into ten years ago and that's a bypass." This comment drew prolonged applause. The ratepayers enthu- siastically and unanimously approved the motion that Lilla Street be improved to the extent of storm sewers curb and gutter but only to include two lanes of paved 'roadway. Secondly that immediate action be taken to seek an alternate route around town for through traffic. Dr. Ralph Price commen- ted that the present flow of traffic does not warrant any more than two lanes any- way. Councillor Reg Rose, the only elected representative 'in attendance fielded ques- tions regarding the road itself and the present state of planning for construction. i His information in addition 'to the response to Gerry Jackman's questions answe- red by the regional office made it quite clear that the plans for the widening of Lilla Street have not been approved yet by Regional office.
