Applying the scientific method to test a folk tale, University of Toronto plant pathologist, Professor Gert Orlob, reached the sad conclusion that garlic and chives won't protect roses from aphids and other pests. Prof. Orlob's study -in non-chemical pest control was sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment and conducted in greenhouses, laboratories and outdoor patches around Toronto. He even made up herbal sprays of the garlic and chives, but these too failed to oncluded that the only way for these plants to be effective controls would be if they were clustered so thickly around the roses that the bugs could not get These are alternatives, in some cases, to chemical pesticides, but at present these chemicals are the mainstay in the battle against animal and insect pests, Dr. Norman Borlaug, 1970 winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, said "if we leave things to Mother Nature's whims, we will harvest only one third to one half of the yield per cultivated acre." It has been estimated that without pesticides, crop yields would be cut in half and food prices would jump to four or five times their present levels. Just imagine the effect of this now with food prices already spiralling higher. pensioners and other people with fixed incomes. Would we be able to afford to use land for single family housing development, for parks, for golf courses, or other recreational purposes if we needed twice as much growing area to feed ourselves? Ideally, we have to keep looking for more natural means of pest control that do not involve chemicals.
