POF.T PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, March 13th, 1974 -- 19 Presents initial budget An intial budget figure of slightly less than $4 million for the construction and maintenance of Durham's regional road system was presented to the region's public works committee last week. About $3.63 million of the $3.9 million forecast unveiled to the committee, is sub- sidized at a 50 percent rate by the provincial ministry of transportation and commun- ications. The other $300,000, pre- sented represents expendi- tures for which there are no provincial monies available. The preliminary budget estimates reviewed by the committee were received as: information, and the staff prepared report will be cir- culated to the other mem- © bers of regional council, the committee decided. The roads budget, which will be part of the region's current budget, is being pre- pared with a March 27 deadline for council appro- val, so that the proposed programs will be eligible for the" subsidy cut-off date of March 31. The two large chunks of the preliminary proposal are: $2,293,400 for road and bridge construction; and $1,332,800 for road mainten- ance. Half of each of these aspects of the regional roads "are paid for by the province. Any expenditures over these amounts are paid for wholly by the region. Also included along with staff's "recommended pro- gram' was a "deferred program' of proposed road projects. The committee will dis- cuss the budget again next Tuesday, before the works committee sends its recom- mendations along to the finance committee for its consideration. What debate there was, in connection with roads bud- get presentation, was be- tween the committee's members and R. E. Dawson, of the provincial ministry, about the level of subsidy the region will be getting for 1974. ee Es = Benefit Hockey Game Port Perry Flamingo O.H.Jr.C : vs Inter-Community | Hockey League Sat., March 16 - 8 p.m. UXBRIDGE ARENA All proceeds to Bruce Smith. ee RR RE ERIE Son ooo oie oon onl Put a jewel in your backyard! ..
