rr cr Ee RR aL = REESE he'd 4 BY 2 - Friday, March 8, was cold and blustery but nothing could cool the spirits of ten excited Girl Guides of the 2nd Port Perry Co. who were waiting at the Scout Hall for the mini bus which would take them to Mon- treal. Soon they would be on their way for a hectic week- end of shopping and sight seeing. The bus arrived and girls WILSON FURNITURE ONCE AYEAR Spring Mattress CLEARANCE and luggage were quickly crammed aboard, leaving just enought room for Cap- tain Wanninkhof and Lieut: enant Hatcher, and of course the bus driver, Mr. Cary Hatcher." After a swift ride on the Metro, we came to Place Alenis Nehon, an incredible doyfntown shopping centre built in conjunction with the famous Montreal town. The evening spent there passed all too quickly for there was much to see and keepsakes to buy. There were many complaints of sore feet as we walked back to our residence. Saturday morning every- one was up early and at breakfast there was a cho- rus of Happy Birthday in honor of Belinda Esplie. Dishes were done and sleep- ing bags rolled away be- cause there was one more special duty to perform be- fore our day began. We en- rolled one of our tender- foot Guide§, Carol Wood. Everyone was very glad to welcome her to our com- pany. Then our bus was at the door and we were ready to go. Our first stop was the Mc Cord Museum, filled with Indian artifacts and early Canadiana and then on to Notre Dame Church. Words. can not describe that awe enspiring edifice. It is incre- dibly beautiful. Old Montre- al is gradually being re- stored as it was 200 years ago and Maison Calwort is an excellent example of the work that is being done. From the basement to the attic one can see how the earliest Canadians lived. Ramsey House is also filled with priceless artifacts of very early Montreal, rang- ing from cradles to fire engines and penny farthing bicycles. We were now tired and hungry so it was across the river to a shopping center for lunch. After which we headed for the Montreal Aquarium and the Alcan Dolphin Pool at La .Ronde, part of Man and His World. After visiting the aquarium and marveling at the antics of the penguins, we walked over to the Dolphin Pool to meet Lieutenant Hatcher's parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. Forbes Nasmith. He and his wife are now living in Montreal. Mrs. Nasmith who was in- volved in Guiding for many years, arranged our itine- rary for us and through the planning we managed to see a lot of Montreal in a very short time. We certainly owe her a great vote of thanks. After the dolphin show, which included amazing games of basketball, bowl- ing and baseball we board- ed the bus and headed for our last stop of the day, St. Joseph's Oratory. This mag- nificent shrine, high above the city on Mount Royal who founded by Brother Andre in 1904. Unfortunately the day was over-cast and much of the view of the city was obliterated but we still telt as though we were standing on top of the world. Saturday night was spent quietly back at Guide House, nursing sore feet and enjoying Belinda's birthday cake. Sunday dawned bright but cold and windy at 10:30 am. We left for St. George's United Church in east Montreal. The mini- ster Reverend Phyllis Smyth welcomed us warmly and presented a service which was open and thought provoking. She carried out a dialogue sermon with anot- her young woman who is a candidate for the United Church Ministry. They dis- cussed the fact that it takes two to have a fight or argu- ment and that if one refuses to be angered then the CY Girl Guides enjoy bus tour to Montreal "PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, April 24th, 1974 -- 15 anger of the other is often forgotten. We were all en- couraged to try it ourselves sometime. a very apt sug- gestion for both the guides and guiders. We do want to thank the parents of our Guides for the support and encourage- ment that we received while planning the trip and for the generous donation from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch, No. 419, which made many extras possible. A special thanks goes to Mr. Cary Hatcher who gave up his weekend to drive our bus and who kept his cool in the Montreal rush hour traffic. It was a great week- end and with a little luck and a lot of hard work perhaps one we could repeat again in the future. oth 7.
