"When we first be- gan." says owner Merlin Dowson. "we felt it was kind of crazy. There were already five stores in Port Perry in 1949 and only 1,100 people!" However, it wasn't as bad as they thought it was and today, a quarter century later. Dowson's store is one of the two leading ones in town, and many of the stores that existed in 1949 have folded up. What does Merlin Dowson attribute his success to? "Well" says he "fair trading and good service jare two of the reasons." . Kenneth, his son and part- ner, adds "We give people what they want." The store still has custo- mers that first began shop- ping there in 1949. In the past 25 years Dow- son's store has been steadi- ly expanding. New depart- ments and extensions have been added every few years as population and demand have risen. They have no immediate plans to expand further but as Merlin Dowson says 'We expect to grow along with the community and every opportunity to grow further will be explored." Merlin has also been handling the catering at the Port Perry High School cafeteria since 1969. Besides she did not like the shift schedules her husband was working before he bought the store. Kenneth feels the anniver- sary "is a milestone. A lot of business has come our way and for that we have to thank our customers." Merlin is happy and proud too, but for an added rea- son: His store has been helping high school students to work their way up, meet people and get ahead in life. "All this is very satisfy- ing" he says and both Mrs. Dowson and Kenneth whole- 'heartedly agree.
