Mina would like the Town Hall to be converted into a 'centre for the arts where people from all walks of life will be able to learn about dance, music, art, sculpture and theatre - use it for hobbies for meetings, for pursuing their artistic talents. the Town Hall can also have a summer theatre somewhat on the lines of Stratford, though not quite like it. A theatre house'in a 100 vear old building will attract people from a radius of 100 miles including Toronto, Mina said. "In terms of the business this will generate in Port Perry and in terms of the cultural impact it will have on the town any investment on the project, private or public, will yield tremen- dous returns" he added. The cultural centre will also help provide an outlet for local talent as well as tap potential talent which Hall Mina feels does exists in this charming little town. If- people -in- Port Perry - initiav show interest and tive, Mina said, then organi- zations like the Canada Council will certainly be glad to support such an idea. : *"The focus will always re- main as a cultural sevice to the community, "Mina con- cluded. Dr. Ralph Price, co- chairman of the Town Hall Coimmittee, wholeheartedly endorsing Mina suggestions, said a cultural centre would be an ideal solution for Port Perry whose only alterna- tive to becoming a bedroom suburb of Toronto is to bring in industries. Scugog Ratepayers Presi- dent Rowland Coy backed the idea saying it would help fulfill a need for recre- ation in Port Perry. He blamed council for not hav- ing any long term recrea- tional plans for the town- ship. There were several other ideas presented on the poss- ible use of the Town Hall. Mina, a professional actor, explains his ideas on converting the Town Hall into cultural centre and a summer Ratepayers' meeting. Charles Foote of the Sea Cadets wanted some space in the Town Hall for the sea cadet home, and appealed for support from the community. Norman Watson, conduc- tor of the Historical Society Choir, backed the cultural centre too and said he had the support of the entire choir of 60 to 70 members. The Choir also needs a place to rehearse, he poin- ted out. The meeting ended with the: people present voting overwhelmingly in favgur of theatre, at Thursday's retaining the Town Hall and supoorting the committee formed to save it. The Committee will now devote itself to raising money for saving the hall. Meanwhile town council has put the Town Hall for sale and invited tenders by 12 noon on June 17, 1974.
