CA PETAL ARON ZAM FIV IREVERINGEY ASAI AT CSUR TANS Announces summer programme Education Minister Thomas Wells has announ- ced a special summer pro- gram aimed at encouraging more native people to qualify for teaching in - Ontario's elementary schools. Under the plan, native people who have a grade 13 standing or equivalent and who are recommended by a native organization will be granted a Temporary Teacher's Certificate upon completion of a seven-week summer program. The pro- gram will be conducted at Hamilton Teachers' College July 2 to August 16. Mature applicants with less than . grade 13 standing will also be considered for admission. Those who graduate from this year's course and com- plete an additional seven- week program next summer will be granted an Interim E lementary School Teach- er's Certificate. The graduates of this year's summer program will be eligible to obtain class- room teaching jobs this September. It is the first time such a program has been offered by the Mini- stry for native people. Mr. Wells said that al- though a degree in arts and science is now required for admission to a teacher's college, the Ministry has adopted a flexible approach to meet specific needs. The same plan has been used to attract French-language elementary . teachers, he said. Mr. Wells said that it was hoped that most of the graduates of the program will return to teach native children. "The native peoples have much to contri- bute to the education of our children," he said. The Ministry will also offer teachers a summer course in Cree, Ojibway, and Mo- hawk. Designed to equip teachers to use the native languages as languages of instruction or to teach the native languages, the five- week course will be held in London, Ontario. 14 members, and under the leadership of Norman Wat- son, and co-ordinators Hazel Slemmon and Roxanna Web- ster, has now grown to 40 members.
