June 4th, at the Oshawa Civic Auditor- um, Robed. for the occasion in ceremonial gowns, the graduates came from many points in and beyond Ontario and Durham Counties. The guest speaker for the occasion was David C. Collier. President and Gene- ral Manager of General Motors of Canada Limited. Music was provided by the Oshawa Civic Band. The graduates were intro- duced to the dignitaries, families and friends in attendance by "Jack David- son. Director of Techno- logy: Fred Haywood, Direc- tor of the Business Division: Hal Holt. Department Head of Applied Arts: and Muriel Ward, Department Head for Nursing. They received their diplomas and certificates from Dr. G.E. Willey, College President. Special mention was given to the fact that Wendell Prime. a technology grad- uate, was the first exten- sion student to earn his diploma through the night school programme. In his address, Mr. Collier referred to the motto of the College "Excellence through Perseverance." "Excellence is apparent here today." he said. "It is apparent in the fine facilities of Durham College. It is apparent in the staff, and in the liaison with business and industry. It is apparent in the performance of earlier grad- uates. and' am certain, that it will be apparent in the future endeavours of today's graduates." The General Motors' Pres- Ve AS a ol ESN SS ay 3 -~ Xe 4 A) ffaitenborehabiibiin sa tunnkos baie ident declared that today, more than ever, we must put the emphasis less on people as groups, and more on people as individuals. "This applies to governments, to st¢hools, to companies." He told the graduates that their individual abilities could accomplish much when pressed by earnest purpose. He asserted "Many of the greatest moments of thought and action have been ac- complished by the words of a single person." Mr. Collier pointed to the importance of the profit motive. He. stated that business and industry have come under increasing attack, blamed for many of the world's ills. "They do not seem to be communicating the true facts to many people," he said. "Withc.at profits. a company becomes a social liability rather than an asset, a poor place to work. a poor neighbour, and a poor tax payer. With profits. a company has the means to put social respon- sibility into positive action, and to enlarge the influence of concerned men." Mr. Collier challenged the graduates to work together to strengthen and improve our fundamental institu- tions. "I am confident," he said. 'that with your great Canadian heritage, with vour knowledge and enthu- siasm - and with "Excel- lence through Persever- ance" - you will reach objectives bevond your imagination on this gradua- tion day."
