Speaking at a conference on Trustee Responsibility and Teacher Power, jointly sponsored by The Ontario Institute for Studies in Ed- ucation, and the OSTC, Mr. Wells said there are several facts that must be clearly understood by school trust- want ces. He told delegates that teacher power is not a pass- ing phenomenon; it is some- thing that must be faced positively and constructively and not with bitterness or anger, 'nor with the hope that it will disappear if we just ignore it long enough.... Teacher power stems from the genuine concerns of many teachers. Teachers a say in education policy-making. That doesn't mean that they should make all the decisions, but they want to feel that their views are at least heard and con- sidered. They want a wide open channel of influence and to my mind there is nothing wrong with that.' School trustees, he said, must improve communica- tions with their teachers, bring their teachers in on things and together discuss matters openly and candidly as a team.
