The students mainly drawn from the business ad- ministration, labour studies, industrial psychology, law and economics have been hired by the Government to participate in the S.T.I.R. (Students Training in Indus- trial Relations) program. Under the program, the students will be employed by the Ministry of Labour and seconded to various business, industry and labour organizations to work in the industrial relations field, It 1s part of the Ontario -Government's program to provide employment oppor- tunities for young men and women during the summer. Labour Minister Fern Guindon said the program would give the students an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience, in industrial relations. He said that industrial relations was becoming more specialized and increasingly important in this highly industria- lized province. The basic intent of the program is to explore the potential of an experience based summer student program which exposes and trains students in Industrial Relations. Originally title as an Internship program, it is designed to place students for the summer with various agencies currently active in the industrial relations environment. Last week, the "students were undertaking an orienta- tion program on industrial relitions at Queen's Univer- sity, Kingston. Purpose of the seminar is- to provide participants with a broad overview of Canadian Indus- trial relations prior to starting their summer internship. The course will be conduc- ted by leading authorities in a variety of organizations. It 'tions will describe the historical development and main features of industrial rela- institutional frame- work. and examine various aspects of industrial rela- tions in practise. Following the course, the students will be assigned to industries, businesses and unions, throughout the pro- vince for a 14 week period. During that time. the stu- dents will be subject to the rules and conditions of work of the business, while his 'salary will be paid by the government.
