Whelan to visit Riding Agricultural Minister Eu- gene Whelan is to make a flying visit to the Ontario Riding this Sunday to sup- port Liberal Norm Cafik for re-election. Mr. Whelan will arrive at Harralea Farms 1'% miles north of Leaskdale by heli- copter, he will spend an informal visit meeting the many area farmer who ex- pected to attend an old style family picnic. Gary Herrema on who's property where the picnic will be held says it will feature country and western entertainment. Races and games for the kiddies and entire family. Those attend- ing are asked to bring own lunches and lawn chairs. Coffee, pop and ice cream will be served from 1 p.m. til 5 p.m. For information call 852-7393. Norm Cafik the Liberal candidate for re-election in Ontario Riding will be made | an honorary Indian Chief of the Ojibway tribe this Sun- day afternoon on Georgina Island. The ceremony is scheduled for 3:30 pm. and will climax an afternoon of Indian music, Indian danc- ing and Indian craft dis- plays. Transportation to and from the Island will be provided by a free shuttle service starting at 12:30 noon and running throughout the afternoon from the Duclose Point Parking lot. June 19. 1974 No. 34 Nestleton Recreation Centre open Community spirit, volunteer work important aids in construction A crowd of over 100 was present at the official open- ing of the new Nestleton Community Centre Wednes- day last week. Among the many guests was Allan Law- rence, MP for Northumber- land-Durham and presently also on an hectic election campaign hoping to retain his seat in Parliament foll- owing the July 8, Federal Election. Also attending were Alex Carruthers, MPP Northum- berland-Durham PC repre- sentative in the Ontario Leg- islature, and the Mayor of Scugog Township, Lawrence Accompanying them were their respective wives. The residents of the Nest- leton area are mighty proud of their $65,000 achievement and have all the reasons in the world to be so. It took a lot of planning and hard volunteer work. estimated to be worth $5,000 to com- plete the Centre. Both the Federal and Provincial Gov- ernments awarded grants to the amount of paying for about 50 percent of the total cost. Some of the furniture such as tables, drapes, re- frigerator, etc. were donated by individuals and organiza- tions. The building is in a central location with a generous amount of field space sur- ounding it, and the interior is bright and airy and will seat about 200. The entrance is in the south end where 'the lobby and kitchen are also located. Mr. Merrill Van Camp acting as MC during the opening ceremonies intro- duced the various speakers and first to extend his con- gratulations was Scugog Township Mayor, Lawrence Malcolm. He reminisced to some length about the time of planning, the obstables pre- senting itself and the excel- lent co-operation among the interested people. He also gave the members of the last Cartwright Coun- cil a great deal of credit for their: important part in the decision making. Mr. Malcolm concluded by saying he was sure the Centre would be of greal benefit to the residents and give much needed commun- ity service. Also speaking briefly were Alex Carruthers. MPP and Allan Lawrence, MP for Northumberland-Durham Riding. They both compli- mented the community res- idents on their fine efforts and extended congratula- tions from their respective governments. Refreshments were served following the opening cere- monies.
