June 8th. when over 400 people turned out to take part in the first Prince Albert street dance An enthusiastic crowd hined the perimeter of the parking lot of Tran's General Store for over four hours listening and dancing to the music of Peter's Platters and taking part in square dancing called bv George 'Pimms Jr The dance. which was or- ganized by a number of local residents. and sanctioned by the Scugog Chamber of Com- merce could only be termed a great success. Through the selling of pop and potato chips. which was the only cost to the public. $20 was realized and donated to the Prince Albert Community Centre. The Durham Music Tour as the project was called, was sponsored by the Durham Board of Education and organized and produced bv the Durham Music Educa- tors Association. The con- certs were presented on consecutive evenings at Brock District High School in Cannington, Pickering High School and Eastdale Collegi- ate, Oshawa. Performances were given by a Junior Composite Band under the direction of Herbert Knox and a Senior Composite Band under the direction of Barry Devereux. Plavers in these bands wie chosen students in Grades 7 13 from Schools through- out the region. A composite choir of students from Grades 7 - 8 from Central Park School, Oshawa and St. Andrew's School, Ajax gave a fine performance under the direction of Mrs. Grace Hastings accompanied by Mrs. Margaret Drynan. Miss Maureen Cooper and. Mrs. Zorah Holliday assisted in training the choristers. A string ensemble from Donevan Collegiate perfor- med under Robert McCaus- MEET land's direction; and the Port High Girls' ensemble from Port Perry High School under Russell Baird's direc- tion. Mr. David Karry, chair- man of the programme com-§ mitteé conducted the Senior School Composite Choir and Senior Band in the finale. Representatives of the Board of Education, Mr. L..G. Parliament, Mrs. E.B. Phin and Mrs. A. Lee brought greetings from the Board and expressed their pleasure in the calibre of music being taught in the@ County as evidenced by the performance of these students.
