I realize that it may not always be conven- ient to do so but thank you for your time anyway. After having written the last re- port, I realized that there are probably a number of people who don't even know what the 4-H program is all about. So, I have prepared a brief summary of the program which I hope that you will print if you ever have a column to fill. 4-H is a program for the development of young people in which participants meet« together in clubs for group activities. It helps todays' youth, giving them guidance friendship and numerous op- portunities. In each community one or more adults will serve as volunteer club leaders. These leaders provide gui- dance to the members and the local club program. Help also comes from the Ontario Department of Agriculture and Food. At present Mr. Ivan Bell is the Agriculture Representative, with Brian Hancock and Paul Ruth as assistants. Each individual is allowed to choose their own project. This may be anything from a field crop project to a animal. This aids the young people by developing their sense of good decision mak- ing after having taken in all the necessary factors. After choosing their project they must then carry it out in full. This teaches responsibility. The member will maintain records which are meaning- ful to him. In the livestock clubs the records contain such infor- mation as the cost of keeping your animal and the amount of daily gain. This gives them a realistic view of the costs and overhead of farm- ing. In short the 4-H program develops self-confidence, teaches you to work with others, helps you to acquire a sense of responsibility, helps develop individual qualities - of leadership, and develops an appreciation of agricul- ture. We meet once a month at some agricultural oriented place. Here we judge live- stock on what buyer wants, have a brief but concise lesson, have time for ques- tions and have a great time. I belong to the South Ontario County 4-H Com- munity Club so the following relates to that specific club. THEY RE AS CLEAN ASA WHISTLE AS NEAT AS A PIN, FOLKS ALL TELL WHO VE EN «J IU gRVICE THOMSON Heating & Air Conditioning 985-3365 CALLED US IN Ames Our project is to raise a beef animal, halter break it, gro- om it, prepare it for fairs, and keep records on it as well as to attend the meet- ings. At meetings we judge cattle and a certain number of points are alotted towards the plaque upon the comple- tion of your project. As of this year the point system is as follows: Signs 50 Records 150 Calf 100 Showmanship 100 Attendance 100 Judging 100 Our project is to be in fine condition for Oshawa Fair because this is where the calves are chosen to rep- resent our club for Beaver- ton Fair and from here on to the Lindsay Fair for an Intercounty Competition. Some calves are priviledged to be able to attend the show at the Royal Winter Fair. There is a bus trip each year for interested members and we go to a couple of interesting places during the course of the day. Also, for outstanding achievement there are various conferen- ces to attend. There is the Regional Conference for fif- teen year olds at Trent University on July 2,3, and 4. The Provincial Leadership Conference was held at Guelph University during the week of June 16 to 22 for members interested in lead- ership training, and from here they have the opporutn- ity to Inter-Provincial and National Conferences. This year Nancy Brown,'and Nan- cy Richardson were honour- ed to attend the Leadership Conference. Only two per county are elegible to attend. This year we are starting a 4-H Council, and the presi- dent of this is Nancy Brown, with Heather Richardson as secretary. This organization is bound to bring the county closer together and put us on the map as far as 4-H is concerned. There is also a Judging Competition where you have the chance of judging sheep, cows, beifers, answer a swine quiz and many more educational tasks. We have our own magazine, the Enthusiast which keeps us in contact with other programs. The 4-H motto is 'Learn to do by doing', and the pledge is 'I pledge- 'My head to clearer think ing My heart to greater loyalty My hands to larger service My health to better living, for my club, my com- munity and my country,' and we live by this.
