Councillors quarrel, raise fists A discussion on a Social services committee recom- mendation at Regional Coun- cil last Wednesday found Councillors John Aker and Jim Potticary glaring angri- ly at each other with raised fists Coun. Aker was at- tempting to get some infor- mation on a recommenda- tion to suspend the purchase of a $7,000 van for Fairview Lodge in Whitby. Each time he asked a question, there would be an interruption from Mayor Potticary of Oshawa who sits behind Coun. Aker. Finally Coun. Aker was so' irritated he asked the Chair- man to ask Coun. Potticary .to stop. An inaudible com- ment from Coun. Potticary (presumably heard by Coun. Aker) caused him to demand an apology. Coun. Potticary's reac- tion was another comment which caused Coun. Aker to turn around angrily and say "I'd like to withdraw you from the house." "Come on, let's ago' re- plied Coun. Potticary roll- ing up his sleeves. "Id even like to withdraw you to the floor" said Coun. Aker. Regional Chairman Walter Beath interrupted at this stage with a soothing remark and the matter ended right there with both councillors cooling off. 8 3 y Ra TL OA PE) BN 4 ial bam thanohisio lund Ad iriutit iv divi. The Chairman of the com- mission, also appointed by the Province, will be paid $6,000 a year. Several attempts to defeat the recommendation, or reduce it by half or confine it $50. per meeting, failed. Totally opposed to the policy was Coun. Mike Breaugh who saw no reason why the Region should pay persons appointed by the province. "If he province wants to appoint, the pro- vince should pay' he said. Coun. Aker was in favour of the pay rate because he felt qualified people would not accept the job if the pay wasn't good enough. "I don't accept that" said Coun. Breaugh "A sewer worker or auto worker is as good as any judge or lawyer." The present chairman of the police commission is a judge while the provincjal appointees area schol principal and a lawyer. An amendment propgsed by Coun. Matheson sugges- ting the rate be halved was defeated in a recorded vote. Another amendment from Coun. Gerry Emm sugges-. ting the rate is be fixed at $50. a meeting was also defeated. Council finally approved the receommendation with a 14 - 10 vote.
