13 i Ns AE cana Ly | 0 4 HECHT TRREE 3 | Uy DEI ALA 4 ' | "Kawartha Theatre draws large crowds The Kawartha Summer Theatre reached the half way mark of its 1974 season with a record breaking pro- &duction of the old Joseph "Er Kesslering comedy, "Arsen- ic and Old Lace' starring Araby Lockhart of Toronto and Joan Panton of Winni- peg. Directed by Ron'Ulrich, the production drew 3,400 people into Lindsay's 682 seat Academy Theatre, or just over 90 percent of its capacity. So far the season shows a healthy 78 percent capacity paid attendance, an increase over last year's excellent record. A visit from Ontario's Minister of Industry and Tourism, the Hon. Claude Bennett marked the begin- ning of the Kawartha's Aug- ust productions. Mr. Bennett and ten of his staff, on tour in <¥ Ontario, stopped to see "The [< Sleeping Bag" by Arthnr Murphy of Halifax. It received excellent reviews "from local press and radio following its opening night, and Mr. Bennett and his party changed plans to stay over in Lindsay and see the show. Directed by Kawartha Producer, Dennis Sweeting, the play features an out- standing set designed by Chris Adeney, a very well known Toronto Artist. The production this week will be "Prisoner of Second Avenue" starring Jack Northmore and Joan Panton, followed by a melodrama written by William Pender- grast of Thunder Bay, "The Secret of the Sypglass". Final production in the last week of August will be the musiczl, "The Apple Tree". Mr. and Mrs. Harold Mec- Laughlin and Kelly, Marilyn Green enjoyed a few days holiday in the Niagara Dist- rict last week. Park. The day began with a delicious picnic pot luck dinner. Mrs. W. W. VanCamp, president welcomed all present and presided for the business. Popowich for Ballard started on the mound with Ron Phinny, followed and Goreski came on to help out after Canadian Tire took the lead. Johnston's hit in the ninth inning clinch the win for Ballard. In Raglan on Wed- nesday, August 7, the visit- ing : Greenbank Gamblers took an early 1 run lead but Raglan overbauld them with 3 runs of their own. Green- bank closed to within one run but could not regain the lead and lost 3 - 2. The next game will be at Greenbank on Wednesday, August 14 with the third game scheduled for the fol- lowing Thursday, August 15. The first game was sched- uled for Bradford last night (Tuesday) with the return game to be played at the waterfront park on Thursday Aug. 15 at 8 p.m. The local Juniors compet- ing in the "C" classifacation are optomistic of their chan- ces in the playoffs, having good pitching and solid hit- ting, but as all softball players know that anything can happen in a short series.
