Not wishing to antagonize anyone, | smiled pleasantly and quietly introduced myself to him. "I'am sick and tired of reading all of these garbage stories from Scugog township council,' he told me quite emphatically.' Although | am not another Ernest Heming- way or Robertson Davies, | told him, | don't think that all of my writing can be called gar- bage. After all, | try hard to make my stories easily understandable and clear. "No! no! no!,"" the man said. "You have it all wrong, | wasn't talking 'about your writing. What | really mean is that all council seems to talk about is garbage.' Again, | had to be on the defensive and tell him that although | wasn' always overly impressed with the things council discusses, all of their discussions aren't bad enough to be called garbage. Oh} don't be so stupid," he said impat- iently. ""Can't you get anything straight. | mean the subject matter under discussion is gar- bage.' control over the subjects under discussion. After all, | told him council had made a few impor- tant decisions recently that couldn't be called garbage. For example, | said, council decided not to do anything about the dispute between the Blackstock Senior Citizens and the Women's . Institute. They decided to let somebody else try to-solve the problem. The man was really exasperated with me by now and in one last attempt to get his point across to me picked up my dictionary and looked up the word garbage. . "Refuse from a kitchen, Etc. sisting of unwanted or unusable pieces of meat, vegetable matter, eggshells, etc." he read to me from the dictionary. *Oh,"" | said, finally understanding his point. "Just about every week, you have some story about' the garbage collection in Cart- wright. Most of. them seem to be just about the same. Week after week of the same type of garbage, eh, excuse me, the same type of story.' SAnd of course there are the stories about "the Fowinship 'wanting to take confrol of the dumps back from the region of Durham", he said. The local council -is sure they could do a better job of handling garbage than the region." | reminded him that we must not call them dumps anymore. The Ministry of the Envi- ronment says they are sanitary landfill sites. "And then if all these garbage stories aren't enough," he said. "There was the fuss a few weeks ago when the local Port Perry garbage man didn't pick up the garbage and had to appear before council and explain what hap- pened." 'Can't you give us a break. We get awfully tired of garbage, garbage garbage," he said. After this convincing line of argument, | was really groping in the dark for anything to say so we could at least part with some agreement. | looked down at my dictionary and looked at the second. meaning listed under "garbage. "Anything worthless or offensive,"" the dictionary said. - We could quickly agree that unless | stopped covering council completely, there would be a lot more garbage stories in the future. By the way, we agreed that was garbage 'with either meaning. Need A Pump? PUMPS FOR RENT PORT PERRY RENT- -ALL 108 WATER STREET -- PORT PERRY. ONT.
