REN § RMAC A YF. | Yacht Club has long association with town The Port Perry Yacht Club and the Village of Port Perry have had a long association, according to club vice-com- modore Bruce Lamorie. The Club was formed in 1948 by a handful of people -and was chartered in 1954. It was originally chartered by four Port Perry residents and five Oshawa residents. Original . directors were Charles Griffen, Frank Baker, Donald Smith, Roy Wotten, George Sulman, Edward Webster, David- Bowman, Edward Gresik and Philip Orde. Mr. Griffen, Mr. Baker, Mr. Sulman and Mr. Orde were from Port Perry. The Port Perry Club is the only chartered Yacht Club on the Trent Canal System,' according to Mr. Lamorie. "There are a lot of yacht clubs by name, but they are really only marinas in fact," he said. '""The fundamental difference is that a chartered yacht club is a non-profit corporation and a marina vacht club is not." The club membership now consists of 17 people from Port Perry, 17 people from Oshawa and Whitby, 18 from Toronto and four from other municipalities. Total investment by mem- bers in their boats is about $250.00. Although the future of the club at its present location in the middle of Lakefront Park has been in doubt for a number of years, the club has a lease at that site until December 31, 1975. As part of the present lease, the club most donate at least $400 a year towards the maintenance of the park. A 20-yedn lease expired in 1968 and a Tease has been signed on a year to year basis since then. "~ The club was officially notified to move out 'as of December 31, 1973, but two extensions have since been granted. Manager Mr. Lamoire said the ¢lub has tried to be a good member of the community and has taken part in such events as supervising the Nonquon Canoe race, parti- cipating in community cele- bration, such as the ones held a few years ago, spon- soring sea cadets and taking part in searches for lost boats. oC The club also supports local business "through the - purchase of lumber, hard- ware and supplies as well as personal purchases of auto- "mobiles and groceries. In July, 1971, a meeting was held in which the Yacht Club and town council dis- cussed moving the club to-a site north of Birdseye Centre. Phil Orde, a founder of the club and a former deputy-reeve, told the STAR that in order to comply with the wishes of the Provincial Government which gives grants for the Lakefront Park, town council asked the club to move. "The fellow who approves the park grants said the town shouln't have the Yacht Club in the middle of the park," Mr. Orde said. When an official plan was drawn up for the town, the Yacht Club was shown at the proposed site north of the Birdseye Centre. The town has a federal lease on a section of crown land on the east side of the railway line on the lakefront on the condition it be used for "public or park purposes. "In 1971, the Yacht Club asked council that_it be. -assured that "any lease that we enter into with the town is legal in all respects, not only Santa here December 7 This year's Santa Claus parade will be on Saturday December 7 and already a number of entries have been received. The Brampton Senators 'and the Clown Band from Brampton will provide the musical entertainment for the parade. This year family floats will be welcomed and a prize will be given for the best family float. There will also be prizes for the most original float and the best afl-around float. Anyone wishing to enter a float should contact Eleanor Wood at 985-2295. ARENA (continued) People who don't use the arena, don't realize how much of a need there is for a new one, Mrs. Kennedy said. For example, when the club has its carnival, they have to use 'three buses for dressing rooms, she said. "But we have no comp- laints about the condition of the ice at the present arena," she said, "it is very good!"'. There were 147 members of the club last year and they skate on Tuesday and Thurs- day nights. They could use more ice il time if it was available, Mrs. Kennedy said. People have expressed an interest in adult figure skating classes, she said. between the two parties, but between the Town of Port Perry and other parties as well. On March 9, 1972, the Yacht Club received a letter from Port Perry Clerk Neil Brodie stating, among other things, that "a lease can be drawn up and signed after the Yacht Club has prepared and presented a completed plan of the area involved for Councils approval". After that, the Yacht Club serious- ly started negotiations but were held up with legal problems with the title. The title problems were finally resolved and an agreement was drawn up to be signed by the Club and the town. But at that point, the Federal Government queried the town's right to lease the land and the club had to wait until a couple of weeks ago to find out that the Federal government had said the town couldn't lease the land north of Birdseye site to the Yacht Club. Consequently, the club pre- sented a proposal to council last week suggesting the club remain where it now is and negotiate a long term lease at a reasonable rent. The club proposed to in- vest in permanent docks, landscape the club and screen the boats in winter storage. The Club also said it" would invest in new club- house facilities at the pre- sent site. Council agreed to consider the matter at a future meeting. See the 1975 ARTICC in our heated showroom .
