When the pump broke down three weeks ago, officials were "able to borrow a pump from Peterborough and install it before the town ran out of | water. The Township has ordered a new pump at the cost of about $5,000. The old pump has broken down before causing the town to be without water. -. Mayor's new chain of office 'Whenever -the mayor of Scugog Township is presid- ing at a council meeting or is representing the township on official business, part of the history of the four munici- palities that made up Scugog & will be with him. A new chain of office has recently been delivered to the Township and will be worn by the Mayor when on duty. It is made of a silver-like material that won't tarnish and is set on a blue velvet background. Soon after the new town- ship came into existance, council asked that a chain of 'along with the mayor's gavel. The gavel was presented to the mayor by the employees of the former township of Cartwright and is used by the mayor to maintain order and to bring the meetings to order. : ] , At the bottom of the oval- ---shaped chain 1s a map of the new township showing the and Lake Scugog. A Maple Leaf is next on the chain, followed by an Indian head. This represents both the first inhabitants of the area as well as the Missis- sauga Indian reserve on the Island. , This brings one to the top of the chain and the same symbols are repeated on the (continued on page 18) 10.6 % hydro rate increaseproposed Port Perry residents will probably face a 10.6 per cent increase in the cost of their -electricity early next year. Mrs. Yvonne Redknap, treasurer of the Port Perry Hydro Eleetric Commission, said an application has been made to Ontario Hydro for approval of the increases. If approval is received by January 1, the rate increase will take place then. Rates cannot be raised until- approval is received. Mrs. Redknap said thaf the commercial increase will-be------The-Port-Perry- Commis---- 11.8 percent. A resident now paying $125 a billing for electricity wi pay $18.03 under the propos- ed increases. "We have no control over two-thirds of our costs," Mrs. Redknap said. "We can't control what we pay for. - 'our power." The costs for power to the Commission will increase on January 1st. He will be leaving his run-down four-room, insul brick house in Prince Albert and be moving into a brand new senior citizen apartment in Port Perry. "The only regret I have is that my wife won't be here with me to share the joy of moving into this wonderful .apartment," he said. He now .pays $35.00 a month rent for the house he now lives in which is located off Josephine Street. "They will never be able to rent this place I am in, again," Mr. Perkins said. 'qt is not fit to live in." "If 1 hadn't been living here, it would have been. condemned a time ago." he said. Mr. Perkins has been liv- long ing at his present location for twelve years. The house has no plumbing and the floor slants steeply in _ one-direction, "About-all it has is elect- ricity," he said. "But it is all I could afford." The house is heated by a Quebec stove that burns either wood or coal. All of these problems will be solved in the new apart- ment, he said. Mr. Perkins is also looking forward to meeting many people of his own age group in the new apartment. "I hardly know anybody around Prince Albert now," he said, 'All the people around here are new." Mr. Perkins had no child- ren and says he doesn't get many visitors these days. "Young people just don't visit like they used to," he said. '"The seem too busy with their own lives." When he was told that 'there would be twenty-seven women and only eight men in the new apartments, he seemed delighted. "Maybe I will have them fighting over me," he said. "If they do, it won't be because of my looks." The apartments are an excellent idea, Mr. Perkins said. XI am by no means sick," . he said. "I just get a little - short of breath but I am well able to look after myself." "But its amazing how you can adjust and what you can get used to." Mr. Perkins said he doesn't watch too much tele- vision and usually goes to bed around 9 p.m. and is up by-7 a.m. He watches television at night and always watches the news. Although Mr. Perkins was born in England, he has spent most of his life in Canada. He moved to Cartwright township as a boy and work- - ed as a farmer until he retired and moved to Port Perry. "There was never any better life than being on a farm," he said. "Man is Cn h¥ Stephen Perkins won't have to look after his old never closer to nature." Mr. Perkins went overseas during the First World War and worked in a shell factory during the Second World War. December is 'big' in Mr. Perkins life. "I was born in December, I was married in December, I was left alone in December and now I am moving into my new home in Decem- ber," he said. Mr. Perkins will continue to get his meals on wheels three times a week in his new apartment. New permit location soon If you need a new motor vehicle permit in the next few weeks, you should still go to the office of Scugog Realty. Although, Mrs. Margaret Waite -will be taking over: responsibility for the issuing of the permits from Larry Doble, the actual change won't take place for a few: more weeks.
