To watch the expression on the face of the average housewife as | come in with my one small box of laundry and stick thd entire load in one washing machine, is one of the highlights of the week. Yes, my yellows, my bright reds, my blacks and browns, all together in one tub. The | rush away and come back in time to pull the clothes out and stick them in the dryer. By this time the six-tub housewife hasn't even sorted her whites, reds, blues, etc. into the right tub. To . | even bring my hangers to the laundromat so | don't have to fold my shirts. Just pull them out of the dryer, stick them on the hanger an take them home. . ; Oh, the wonders of permanent press. I must admit, though, | have one secret. Never buy anything white. = Another joy of being a bachelor is coming home from a hard day at the office and being hungry. There is really nothing like burned ham- burgers and half-frozen french fries to fill you up. , Or, how about some delicious instant potatoes. Of course, one of the real advantages of living by yourself, especially when you are a journalist, is that whenever you have to cover a meeting, such as regional council or township council, you can almost look forward to it. I mean, after a while, even a township council meeting is more entertaining than fhe latest adventure of Chief Robert Ironside. And' you can't read all the time. Another sometimes advantage of being a journalist, is that you get invited to various dinner meetings where they usually have a pretty good meal.- | was invited to two last weekend. : I have always figured that if you can get aC good meal and a story at the same time, it's not a bad bargain. Even without the story, it is not too bad. And then there is' housecleaning. No matter how many times you put it off, jt still has to be done. After a while, | make a firm resolution that this indeed will be the day that | will do the housecleaning. Then, all | can do is hope somebody calls me telling me about an accident or fire somewhere so | can once again escape. : + But | must admit that | really don't like an untidy apartment and find myself cleaning my apartment three or four times a week. What a waste of my talents. Whenever- it is time to entertain, the place must be neat and presentable, expecially when its an important guest, like somebody that might take over, among other things, as your housecleaner, at some point in the future. One of the real disappointing things is that whenever company leaves, the place is a mess again.' . | have a complete table setting for eight, not that | very often entertain eight people.. You just don't have to wash the dishes as often when you have more dishes. ; Just stick them under the sink, wipe'up the table and stove, and nobody will know the difference. Of course, | could always put an end to it all. But I really don't want to do anything drastic, like get married. the government will build another apartment complex in the area. Residents are charged about twenty-five per cent of their income for rent in the apartments. . I **A Jot of people only have itheir old aid pension and the- ldphey pay in the neighbour- hood of $40.00 a month." . There will be five couples living in apartments and the rest will have a single occup- ant. There will be eight men and twenty-seven women. "We are lucky to get this many men," Mrs. Sevick said. "Itis a well known fact that we women outlive men." ) Pegple moving into the apartments will be coming from all over the township and for many the new apart- ments will be a real improve- ment over their present accommodations. "Some of the people mov- ing in didn't even have inside toilets before," she said. "And many of their places were very poorly heated." Although poor heating may not bother young people that much, it makes a real difference to seniors, she said. } Each new apartment is electrically heated with a separate control for the bed- room. and the living room. Another obvious advant- age is that they will be closer to downtown Port Perry and to the doctors in town. "Many of the older men are still hanging on to their driver's licences, but they know they will have to give them up soon," she said. "They really 'worry about what would happen if they "had to get to the hospital or doctor in a hurry." For most, their social life will improve greatly when "they move in with people of itheir own age, she said. " "When I open a building, I set up a buddy system," she said. "It is up to one person to telephone another once a day for a week, and then the other way around for the next week."
