Attempts in vain Police, vet, Dear Sir, We would like to report on an accident which happened on October 25th. A dog was hit on 7A. We. Surprised with output of input The Editor, Port Perry Star, Sit: . © How thrilled I am that the Regional Planning and Development Office of the Region "of Durham wants input from Scugog. And in particular from me, a resid- ent! (Editorial, Port Perry Star, October 23, 1974). How surprised I am, though, with the output from last year's input. Last winter. Scugog in-putted their opposition to the widen- ing of Lilla Street. Now the Region of Durham plans to widen Lilla Street. Do we have to put-up with this on-put? The man who hit the dog notified the police and then left. We took a rag and dragged the dog off the highway. The dog was suffering with internal injuries which then led to: convulstons, The policeman arrived half im hour after he was notified. He didn't look closely "at - the dog at all, said he could "do nothing and left us crying children to attend a dying dog in the ditch. Blood was profusely running from the dog's nose and mouth. At this point, one student left because she could not bear the sight of the suffering animal. Our parents tried to assist in every way they could. First, they contacted a vet which could not do anything because the dog's owner was unknown. Then, they phoned the Humane Society which refused to come to Port Perry to pick up the dog. Pet Care in Port Perry could not be reached, the situation occurred when we tried to contact the dog catcher. - Sa MN NN NNN SANNA NNN THIN | b= for After three hours of severe suffering for the dog, action was taken. Our parents called the police for the second time. Then, they found out the policeman had reported to Whitby the dog as dead when he was suffer- ing. : Meanwhile, we were try- ing to urge the suffering dog on in the cold night. - It became darker and colder. A kind lady contributed a blanket for the dying dog, but when the policeman, finally, came, he said it was foolish of us to comfort him because he was going to die anyways. We had to leave the bleed- ing, dying dog in the ditch. With tears streaming down our frozen cheeks and very disappointed that because it was a dog, no one cared. At R. H. Cornish, a con- stable comes to tell us police- men will always be there to help us. We, the four students, have lost some of our respect for policemen because the policeman that came to the accident we witnessed didn't CARE.
