Mrs. Maria Galante and Jim Wilson are all feeling better after their care in hospital. Mrs. Ethel Redman is still in Centenary Hospital but gradually tak- ing therapy after surgery and accomplishing the act of walking again. Today Mrs. Reta Wilson is having her troublesome gall bladder removed. Last Wednesday morning, twelve Island ladies met at the home of Mrs. Elsie Pogue at 9 a.m. to watch her make a batch of bread from beginning to end. As well as gaining a lot of profitable knowledge, there was a lot of fun too. Mrs. Pogue was taking advantage of her husband's hunting absence by also opening her home in the evening for "Grace" U.C.W. The "Head" U.C.W., also RX A 81 met Wednesday evening, but at the lovely new home of Mrs. Irene Carter. Eighteen ladies were present includ- ing guests Mrs. Edna Beckett, Mrs. Edith Davis and Mrs. Linda Parry. The theme of the Devotions ""Liv- ing with security and insecurity" was exemplified by the opening thought, the prayer by Mrs.Helen Hortop, the hymn "The Lord's My Shepherd", the scripture 5 ¥ A Monday morning Remembrance Day Service was held in Blackstock to honour the town's war dead. Rev. Reg. Rose handled the service.as Mayor Lawrence Malcolm read the role of those who lost their lives in service to their country. The boy scouts and girl guides marched from the Recreation Centre to the Cenotaph as part of the service. During roll call we were requested to tell something we had done to prepare for winter. All had made some sort of preparation including the storing of food, providing for warmth of home or cleaning. It was noted that our U.C.W. has received third prize and ten dollars from the "TIMES" recipe contest in which there were eleven entries. ' Notes or cards ofr appreciation were received from Clarence Carter, Reta Rodman, Women's Welfare League at Simcoe Hall, Camp Quin-Mo-Lac for don- ation, Sandra Taylor for pot of mums and best wishes from her neighbours for her store opening, Tom Redman, David and Lynn Tripp for catering at their wedding, "Grace" U.C.W. to members who helped with their turkey supper. Mrs. Edna Beckett gave us h a few treats on the piano, a solo, being 'The Maple Leaf Rag'. Alva Thompson read a poem on '"Churning Time" and conducted a contest on the fifteen Prime Ministers of Canada, which of course, was won by a history loving lady, named Helen Redman." We are sorry to hear that Flora (Miller) Muffitt who spent her early youth on the Island and has had several years of brave conflict with poor health is now in Women's College Hospital. Sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Morven Hughes in the recent passing of his sister who was ailing for many months. Mrs. Stichmann has now completed her rigid course in Real Estate. We learn that being a good real estate broker is now quite an accomplishment according to the. course, exams and qualifications. The Women's Institute will meet Wednesday, November 20-at the Island Hall. For roll call you are requested to bring a gift for Christmas exchange. Mr. Greg Fedyk will speak on pharmaceuti- cal drugs. Twelve ladies are taking part in the course, 'More Ideas of Sewing with Knits'. Many tricky questions are being answered. There are three or four babies to be baptized next Sunday. Women's lib was almost apparent at Sunday School on Sunday as there was scarcely a boy in sight.
