Mrs. White showed a film entitled **I'nformation Centre'. The film showed a Distress Centre in operation. The gneral theme was the ability of the Centre to pul "People in Distress', in touch with the right organiz- ation that could be of help to them. It was extremely interesting and informative. Mrs. White also made us aware of a proposed new law in the Ontario Health Dispen- sing Act, making the public more responsible and more aware of their rights in the Health Field, particularly in Governing Boards, and the placing of Lay people on the Board of Health Dispensing Act. For this area, the Social Service Commission is Mrs. Judy: McColl. The film certainly left us with a great deal to think aboul. The meeting closed by all repeating the Mizpah Bene- diction. Luncheon was served by Mrs. Irene Lerch and Mrs. Edith Brunton. -- NT (French Imported Perfume) Eau de Cologne $4.50 Bath Powder $5.00 2 oz. 50.1 Spray Cologne $8.00 oz. Why, -- Bruce Stewart with There are many cynical people around these days. All they do is dwell on the shortcomings of whatever somebody does. A perfect example of this is people's reaction to what township council does. Last week when | was coming home from a council meeting, | was stopped on the street by a bearded gentleman, | should have known from somewhere, but couldn't quite place where | had seen him before. } All He asked me was if | had been a good boy so far this year and was | working hard. |, half-jokingly, told him | was always good. I just turned around for a second to look at somebody screeching their tires and when | turned back he was gone. So | continued walking-a little ways and was again stopped by somebody else who asked me what council had done that night that was: worthwhile or usefuy). Now, | thought, this would be my chance to look on the bright side of things and not be cynical like everybody else. | told him council had decided to build a new ! arena. The person seemed impressed, but then E carefully asked me "How are they going to finance this new arena?' - I had to tell him that council hadn't decided that yet, they want the Arena Committee to study it some more. "0.K., then, what is the arena going to look "like, who is going to build it, and when are they going to start?' he asked. Once again | had to tell him that council hadn't decided that yet either. Triumphantly now, he asked me where they C were going to build it. | knew what the reaction would be if | fold ; him council hadn't decided that yet, so | decided to tell him that most councillors seem to favour a site the township owns by the sanitary landfill site. " "You mean the property they have beside the dump?' he asked, and then started rolling in laughter. "Yes, that's it," | told him. "That's about perfect for this council," he said. "'I can see it now, somebody comes to town and askes where the arena is." B "So you tell them, 'Oh, It is just down the street here beside all the garbage. You can't miss it, you can smell it for miles." "And you will know if you have gone too far', you could tell the stranger, 'Because the arena is right in front of the town's sewage lagoon. You can't miss that either'. After that, he just kept laughing so | walked away, going over. the conversation in my mind and trying to find better answers for the next questioner. What did council do? - - I immediately thought of the Blackstock's Senior - Citizen's dispute with the Women's Institute. But | forgot about that as soon as | remembered council had passed that decision onto the Cartwright Parks Board. Then | thought of the Lilla Street delegation | forgot that in a hurry, too. As | was walking and thinking | almost ran { right into the bearded gentleman | had seen earlier. This time his unusual red suit and black boots stuck out more in my mind than before. what the trouble was. When | told him, his pot belly started to roll like jelly with laughter. "'Son", he said to me, "You have a very just tonight, they did a wonderful thing for me and my reindeers". "They decided to close off Queen Street for three hours on Saturday, December 7, so | can come and see all the girls and boys'. And with that | realized council had approved the closing of Queen Street for the Santa Claus parade. As | turned to confirm my suspicion about who | was really talking to, he had disappeared again and all | could hear was a faint cry of On Dancer, On Prancer...." But now | realize there is no use telling people my story because they would be too cynical to believe it. rls eae e5eSesese + 2525252525252525¢5¢ H ru Ln ~~.
