Ld \F 3d als Scugog WI hears talk on drugs, abuse By Mrs. Bonnie Gerrow Scugog Island Women's Institute met at the Com- munity Hall for the Novem- ber meeting with twenty members present and two visitors, Mrs. Norma Tower and Mrs. Valerie Medway Welch. In the absence of the pianist, Mrs. Reta Wilson, the Ode and Collect was repeated in unison. A speedy recovery is wished to Mrs. Wilson who is just home from Hospital following surgery. The theme of the meeting was Agriculture and Cana- dian Industries with a look at the Drug Industry. Motto - An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, or as we should think in metric today -- thirty grams of. prevention is worth half a kilo of cure. _ President Betty reader « Greenbank 4-H news Greenbank Tea Grannies held third meeting at Heather Manilton's, discus- sed writing invitations, pre- paring a guest room and packing a suitcase. Our fourth meeting was held at Janice Till's home, when we talked about format and informal teas. We enjoyed having Mrs. Blakely with us to demonstrate mak- ing fancy sandwiches. Our fifth meeting held at Darlene Gibson's when we spoke of styles of different parties, decorations, enter- tainment, duties of a good hostess and guest. We closed our meeting with some games. Our sixth meeting held at Mrs. Denby's home, here we discussed menus for differ- ent types of parties, we began plans for our party to entertain our Mothers and W.I. members. We decorat- ed cup cakes for our group work. - } Our seventh meeting was held at Leslie Dempster's home. We discussed and planned our invitation, eti- quette at club meetings and dinners and banquets includ- ing giving toasts. We comp- leted plans for our party and our exhibit for Achievement Day. Our project ended with a party held in Greenbank United Church where we welcomed our mothere, W.I. members, three new mem- bers and Miss McGlenaghan, our Home Economist. After a short program, everyone joined in some games fol- lowed by a dainty lunch. We hope all enjoyed themselves. The Commit- tee in charge of purchasing new equipment for the hall kitchen, reported the silver- ware and extension tables are here and the dished are ordered and should be here shortly. Correspondence was read with a newsy letter from 'Kathy Chambers. A W.L Workshop will be held on April 9 when we will learn more about our Handbook and program planning. We hope that members from other Institutes will feel welcome to join us. A carload have planned to attend the W.I. Convention at the Royal York on December 2nd. A committee was appoint- ed to make plans to sell refreshments at Mrs. Day's auction sale in Port Perry on Saturday, November 30th. Jess Chambers introduced the guest speaker, Mr. Greg Fedyk, a pharmacist with Anca Co. in Whitby. Mr. Fedyk spoke on the Drug Industry and showed three films- Food Mystique, Little Children and Big Poisons, and Drug Abuse. A question period followed which Mr. Fedyk capably answered. We are very fortunate to again have such a [ine speaker and an educational program. As we do not have a meeting in December, the next meeting will be on January 15th when we cele- brate our 3rd anniversary. An exchange of a homemade gift proved to bring out a talent in each member. A. Fleming, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food- horiculturist. "It is long- lived, withstands the warm, dry air of most homes well 985-2066 and needs infrequent water- ing." Because they grow slowly, cacti need repotting only once every two or three years. Their oddity of form and the beautiful flowers some produce make them excellent plants for most ~ homes. During November, December, January, and early February, the cactus does not grow vigourously because it cannot get enough light. Keep it in a bright, cool Iacation where the temperature is as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Water it sparingly only when shriveling has begun or the soil in the pot is bone dry. Be sure the soil drains quickly.
