Less than thirteen per cent of the questionnaires on the proposed official plan were returned to the region of Durham. In Scugog the rate of return was exactly thirteen per cent, while the regional average was 12.7 per cent. About 2,500 questionnaires were distributed to various groups and individuals. Of those returned, 61.3 per © cent were in favour of a program designed to pre- serve the sensitive wildlife areas of the region such as the Nonquon Marsh and the South Scugog Marsh. A program to retain the prime agricultural land of the region drew a 60 per cent favourable response. Less than 45 per cent of those who responded wanted a transportation program that emphasized public tran- sport while less than 40 per cent wanted a program to increase public access to such places as Lake Ontario, Lake Scugog and the Oak Ridges Moraine. Nobody from Scugog who returned the questionnaire wanted increased access to the above areas. Only 37 per.cent of the returns wanted a program to protect the character of the hamlets and small settle- ments by restricting the amount of development allowed. Only fourteen per cent of the Scugog returns opposed a program to encourage new industry in the region. Nobody in Scugog opposed a program to encourage industry to locate adjacent to some northern communities while 26 per cent of the overall returns objected to this idea. Central Seven is dedicated to the principal that all retarded persons should live, work, play and go to school in their home area. In order to do this, programs for them must be supported by the community at large. ' At present there is an URGENT need for volun- teers to assist a child in the pre-kindergarten class at Uxbridge Public School. They will be asked to attend one morning a week from 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. A willing- ness to help is the only important criteria for volun- teering. Literature concern- ing the retarded and volun- teer training manuals are available from the Associat- ion. For further "information, please contact Mrs. Lois Taylor, Paxton Street, Port Perry, or call 985-7066. We plan to start January 2, 1975. The second important issue is the need for an organized program for pre- school retarded children in the Brock, Uxbridge and Scugog part of the Region. A study is being made by the Association to determine how many such children (aged 2 - 5) are in the area, where they are located and if they are taking part in a program outside of the Region. It has already been established that there are not sufficient numbers to dictate a centre for the children to come together. _ We are proposing that a qualified staff person be available to set up a pro- gram for each child in his - home community. We are asking parents to give us the needed informat- ion to establish if this is possible. If you have just moved into the area, we especially need to meet you. Anyone can assist us by clipping this item and men- tioning it at other meetings he attends. - Please contact Mrs. Albert (Elizabeth) Fulford, 268 Rosa Street, Port Perry, or call 985-7100.
