In a letter dated December 4. Dean Kelly, president of the Association, said the residents had been very patient so far. "However, unless we receive action within 10 days © Tam instructing our attorney to proceed with a Writ of Mandamus to enforce the obligation of the Township, on the same terms as- requested of us in your letter of-October 3." The Association has been pressing council to give Coulter Street at least min- imum yearly maintenance. The road was maintained by the former Township of Reach. The. above statement was made to the Star Thursday last week. The letter in question was read in Council Monday night and a. motion was passed to the effect that the summer maintenance provided by the former Township of Reach would be taken over by the Township of Scugog. The lands ad- jacent to the road in question is summer residential. The meeting started at 10:30 a.m., with President Vernon Powell, Oshawa,-R. R. 1, in charge. The report on the various projects carried out in 1974 were discussed by Ivan Bell, Agricultural Represent- ative, and Bill Hurst, Soils and Crops Specialist, Brigh- ton. A very interesting pro- gram was carried out during the year; 117 different farmers took an active part in one or more crop improve- ment projects this year. Tests and demonstrations were carried oul on a total of 159 acres. The guest speaker on the afternoon program was Mr. Bill Hurst, Soils and Crops Specialist, Brighton. Mr. Hurst discussed many of the problems that were exper- ienced with the corn crop in 1974, and offered suggestions on how the situation might be improved in future years. The speaker emphasized a number of items, all of which could affect the success of the corn crop, such as seed selection, planing depth, plant population, soil testing and fertility, and the utiliz- ation of farm manure. The speaker was introduced by Ivan Bell, and thanked by John Warren. The delegates to the annual meeting of the Pro- vincial Soil and Crop Scugog Briefs Scugog Council decided not to accept an offer from a local firm wanting to buy a used Gestetner at Monday night's meeting. Victor Malcolm deputy- clerk told the councillors the machine was in good condit- ion, but the Township owned a few pieces of other types of equipment that could pos- sibly be sold. Tt was suggested a list of the equipment be made up and let local organizations have the first chance of purchasing them. The local Oddfellows Lodge will again for the fourth consecutive year cele- brate a Fellowship evening. The date is April 18, 1975, and according to a letter sent to the Toivnship of Scugog, the theme will be 'Salute the Youth". A request from the lodge to have council declare the week, April 6 to April 12, 1975, Fellowship Week, in support of the annual event, was unanimously approved by council. During a discussion concern- ing housing, Mr. Malcolm said, he didn't think the need for senior citizens housing was much in demand. When the municipal staff had sent out some 1,400 questionaires recently, only 28 replies were received and most of these were only inquiries. Scugog Township supports resolution Scugog Township at Mon- day night's meeting gave support to a resolution be the County of Grey to subsidize farm labour. Councillor Donald Frew, during a discussion preced- ing the passing of motion, said, "at's very difficult to find qualified farm labour in this area because the farm- ers are unable to pay the high rate of pay General Motors do." Mr. Frew, a tobacco farm- er told the council the- difficulties didn't affect him, but he was familiar with what other farmers had to contend with. Part of the resolution read: That the Provincial Government be petitioned to provide a 50 per cent subsidy for farmers who hire help in their farm operations so the farmers will be in a position * to pay wages that will attract competent help to the farm- ing industry.
