REPEL ECN SAFE SE 4 PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Dec. 18, 1974 -- 5 Former high school students Editorial unfair to author disagree with Star editorial Dear Editor, In regards to your column concerning the feelings of an irate father on a certain piece of "Filth" being studied in a local high school. We feel it necessary to offer forth an opinion from former students, having read the piece of material in question. The objective of any english course is to study a piece of literature for its intrinsic value, not its superticial . meanings. The book in question was used merely as advice in juxtoposing that of an ideal society with one of a non-ideal society. As always is the case, the material in question is al- ways judged by a paragraph or two and not the whole literary work. Had this irate parent read the whole novel and judged it by more than these few paragraphs men- tioned perhaps his opinion might not have been so biased. He should instead try to understand the aesthe- tic value of the whole novel involved, and would there- fore not relegate it to the gutter, as is the case. The only problem with a novel of this type is that instead of judging the work for its literary value Junior will come home and say, "Look Daddy, see the naughty words". This would tend to naturally upset any person at first glance, but in proving Appreciates Star, extends greetings Dear Sirs'; . I am taking advantage of your offer described in an editorial of your 11-27-74 edition. Therefore, I enclose my check in the amount of $8.50 for an additional one year subscription. After all, a book such as "Ball Four" stayed atop the New York Times best seller list for. months and it too contained such "filth" as aforementioned. In closing, we would just like you to remember, "Ignorance is" bliss" and "Filth is in the eye of the beholder". Yours truly, Shawn Lackie & Brenda Lewis. Heading not correct Dear Sir: In the December 11th issue of The Port Perry Star (page 5) you published a letter written by me. Although I was certainly pleased to see my letter in print, I was extremely upset to see in large, bold typeset the word- ing of YOUR heading - "Agrees that religion shouldn't be TAUGHT in the schools." Please read my letter again. You will find I made the following statement: "IF religion is taken out of 'the schools it should be taken off the DEBATING agenda." My dictionary says that "to teach" means to impart knowledge by lesson, and that "to debate" means to argue or dispute a state- Commends students, staff Dear Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the students and staff of the Port Perry High Schol who- participated in last Wednes- day's performance of "A Child's Christmas in Port Perry". It was, without a doubt, a tremendous success and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who attended, children and adults alike. We as parents read and hear so many things through the news media about all the trouble our teenagers are in today, but Wednesday's per- formance is just one example of the many won- derful things that young people can do if they are willing. Let we, as parents, encourage the young people of our community to keep up the fine work. Thank you for a most enjoyable evening! Sincerely, Marilyn Gibson. Therefore, the word- ing of my letter distinctly meant: "I heartily agree that IF religion is not going to be imparted to the stud- ents in school, then it should not be the subject of a debate in school." our heading is certainly misleading. Please rectify this error. Sincerely, Edith Brunton. SYLVANIA MAGIC CUBES wa sss $1.99 'novel as "filth". Dear Editor; It was with mixed feelings that I read your editorial of Dec. 11. I was pleased to see the Star take a strong stand "on a controversial topic. Consistent sitting on. the fence is a weakness of many rural weeklies. However, 1 would like to take issue with two points. It 'is extremely unfair to an author to pick only a few paragraphs out of context and thereby condemning his One can choose paragraphs from many acceptable writings, the Old Testament included, and decide it to be objection- al filth. Only when these sections are included with the rest of the context, can one make a valid judgement. Secondly, I disagree that we should attempt to act as censors for others, particul- arly high school students. We can only contribute to their education by allowing them the opportunity to read any and all selections and permitting them to reach their own conclusions as to their merits, if any. Surely we must assume that these students are mature enough to be their own censors. If not, if is fruitless to attempt to shield them, in this day and age, from anything but "the beautiful English language". 1 feel they can benefit more by discussing literature in the atmosphere of a classroom with their teacher and peers rather than glancing at the "good parts' in back alleys. I don't feel that my money is being wasted at all. Sincerely, John Bardeleben. Could this be "fun" Dear Editor: Last week you printed a warning about people being asked for money or they would receive a punch in the mouth. I would like to add a warning to motorists con- cerning a big white cadillac that rams into cars at Stop signs.
