May the coming year hold nothing but pleasantness for you. A special wish for happi- ness in. the coming year is conveyed to all from Mrs. H. Fearnley of West Hill. Hettie is known and loved by people in the Caesarea and Nestle- ton area. She has spent over forty years in our midst. This year she decided that the hardships of winter would be a little too much for her but has promised to be back in the Spring. We pray that good health remains with Hettie and she returns to us early in the Spring. Due to a snowmobile accident, Mr. H. Rutherford of Caesarea is at present a patient in Port Perry hospit- al. What a terrible way to spend New Year's Eve. Hurry and get well Harold, your many friends miss you. Thanks to Mr. Gordon Cooledge many people that were unable to acquire tic- kets to the Néw Year's Eve dance in Nestleton were shown a marvelous time at the Community Hall in Caes area. Approximately 100 people were in attendance. The music was provided by Chester Pedzekowski. A buffet followed. Gord cer- tainly does a terrific job of anything he attempts.... especially on such short notice. Several of our local citiz- ~ ens have requested that I mention the fact'that the way tickets for the New Year's dance in the Nestleton Com- munity Centre were handled is rather disgusting. They wish to know why one person is allowed to reserve sixteen tickets for friends of theirs... most of which have never attended a dance in the Nestleton Centre and why other tickets were reserved for the chosen 'few'. We certainly require and wel- come out-of-towners to our dances but sixteen tickets to one person is rather overdo- ing it. Local people should be given a chance first and then, others may purchase remaining tickets. This is not my opinion alone, but I also believe in playing the game fairly. In my experience over the years with dogs, I have owned a few and have seen hundreds that are quite tal- ented, but there is one dog that is simply amazing. His name is Joe and is the prize possession of Mr. Guy Raines of Port Perry. Joe is a mixture of Shepherd and Labrador and is approxi- mately two years old. I have personally witnessed a few of Joe's tricks. One after- noon while visiting Mr. Raines, Joe decided that he was hungry so Mr. Raines told him to go and get his dish. In order to do so, Joe had to open the basement door with his paw and go down four steps to fetch his dish. After doing this...to my dismay, his master said, "You did not bring your knife", at which time I thought, boy this I must see in order to believe. Joe then reopened the door and brought the knife with the handle extended to his mas- ter and sat and waited for his meal. Mr. Raines then took the labels off of four large tins of food all the same size and lined them up on the floor and told Joe to pick out his food. I watched as he went to the tins and selected his dog food. Joe does this all the time. If someone comes to the door to visit, Joe uses his paw to turn the door knob and his mouth to open the door. If Mr. Raines is in bed, that dog will, under no circumstances open that door and if anyone tries to, he will soon voice his object- ion. Mr. Raines owns two iden- tical jackets, one is green and the other blue. If he dons the blue one, Joe knows that he and his master are going for a walk or to work in the yard. If Mr. Raines puts the green jacket on, Joe goes to his mat in the kitchen and there remains, for he knows that his master is going in the car.and he must stay and guard the house. Recently, Mr. Raines took Joe to Master Feeds with him to purchase some scratch for his ducks. The man gave Mr. Raines the wrong grain by mistake but Joe knew the difference and would not let his master take it. The mistake was dis- covered and that pleased Joe for he then wagged his tail and went to the car to await his master. Yes...Joe is indeed an asset to his master. : Manchester News Season's Greetings to the Port Perry Star Staff and management. Church Sunday, Jan. 12 at 11:15 p.m. Rev. B. R. Pogue in charge.
