We have had several meetings since our first on October 16th, 1974. The meetings are held twice a month at the home of a member. We have our business portion of the meet- ing, and then a cultural program. Two girls partici- pate in each program. "Poise is Charming' was a program presented by Joyce Elliot, a dance instruc- » » tor from Uxbridge. She was a guest speaker introduced Beta Sigma Phi in full swing by Lois Bushell and Carol Martland. The program "Under- standing Love" was pre- sented by Fran Sluggett and Dianna Findlay. A short story, "Arrangement in Black and White", from the book '"Man and His World" was read by Dianna. The December 4, 1974, meeting we exchanged ideas for Christmas decorations and toys. We, also, had a Christmas cookie exchange. Later in December, some of our members attended a Christmas dinner at the- | 0.P.P. Harvey Edwards, alias Paul Clark, 35, of R.R. 2, Port Perry, faces two charges of fraud following an investigation by police into the passing of four bad cheques valued at over $300. Provincial police of the Whitby detachment said three cheques, totalling $244. were issued to Master Feeds in Port Perry and another cheque in the amount of $63.53 was issued to a Port Perry man for payment of a fuel-oil-bill. Our sorority received gifts, and a hearty welcome from the Oshawa chapters into the growing number of Beta Sigma Phi. Our Christmas meeting was held at the home of President, Mrs. Dianna Findlay. Mrs. Findlay acted as Santa in distributing the secret sister gifts. We enjoyed the program "Love and Marriage" presented by Bunny Rowland and Glenda Hutcheon. Refreshments were served. The service projects in- clude working in the hospital tuck shop and a Christmas basket for a needy family. 'Employment standards act now effective The new Employment- Standards Act received third reading and approval in the Ontario Legislature, Dec- ember 17th, 1974. In addition to the existing standards: Minimum wage, vacation pay, overtime pay, equal pay, termination pay and collection of wages the Act now provides for seven paid statutory holidays: New Year's Day, Good Fri- day, Victoria Day, Dominion Day, Labour Day, Thanks- giving and Christmas Day. The overtime pay provis- ion has been amended to provide time and one-half for overtime for hours in excess of forty-four in a week. The Pregnancy Leave pro- vision has been extended to seventeen weeks for employees with one year's service or more and covers all employers having one or more employees. Employers will no longer have to provide transport- ation for female employees finishing or starting work between the hours of mid- night and 'six o'clock in the morning. Female employees under 18 may now work after midnight. The penalty for contra- vention of the Act has been increased from $1,000 to $10,000 and or six months in jail and responsibility is extended to officers, direc- tors or agents of the employer.
