Sympathy iy extended to Mr. and Mrs. Larry Schry- burt on the very sudden passing of his brother Arthur of Newcastle who suffered a fatal heart attack this past week. Mr. Brian Dunsmoor spent the weekend with his par- ents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Dunsmoor having just- returned from a holiday to Australia. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Chap- man, Linda and Lori of Port Perry were Sunday supper guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Harris. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Archer of Whitby, Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Archer of Bowman- ville, were Sunday callers of Mrs. Wilbert Archer. Quite a number of relat- ives and former neighbours of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Franklin of Oshawa attended their Open House on Sunday on the occasion of their fiftieth wedding anniver- sary. Winners at the weekly Senior Citizens Card party on Tuesday evening were Ladies first - Alice Hoskin; second - Evelyn Laverty; third - Beatrice Coolidge. Men's first - George Heaslip; second Irwin Marshall; - third - Wm. Forder. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Tennyson Samells who celebrated their 59th Wed- ding Anniversary recently. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Kelly of Bobcaygeon were Saturday evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Kelly and girls. Meeting A dainty lunch of cookies and tea or coffee was enjoy- ed by the ladies as they gathered for the January 14 General U.C.W. meeting which was opened with a poem, "Our Purpose' read by Peggy Larmer. Ruby VanCamp led the worship, her theme being, "We are responsible for the way we use our time." Hymn 243 was sung and two read- ings were taken from the Service book. After the reading in unison of a New Greed, Ruby led in prayer. A fitting New Year's devot- ion entitled, '"'Time to Spend" was given following the reading of John's instruc- tions to the Phillipians - to rejoice in the Lord. Since 1975 is the Golden Anniversary of the United Church of Canada, Rev. V. Parsons gave a resume of Church union - first within the Methodist, Congre- gational and Presbyterian Churches themselves and later - in 1925 - the joining of those denominations to form the United Church of Can- ada. His various relative local stories from Newfound- land (where there was the United Church of Canada before that province joined the Dominion) to British Columbia were most inter- esting as was an explanation of the symbols on the Church's crest. Meeting ..The first meeting of the 0.N.O. for the year 1975 was held at the home of Judy Crawford in Blackstock on January 9. A number of members and one visitor was present. The meeting was chaired by our new president, Andrew Weir. We had an extensive busines meeting with many items on the agenda. A motion was passed to donate money to start our new Brownie pack which is being formed. A committee was elected to help guide the membership with ideas for celebrating our 25th anniversary this year. Our roll call was a Chinese Auction with Andrea Weir acting as auctioneer. All present really enjoyed the fun. Judy and her group served Burketon news Mr. and Mrs. Howard Davey, Bowmanville, were callers of Mr. R. Davey on Saturday. Mr. J. Tabb is under the doctor's care, we wish him improved health in the com- ing year. Mr. and Mrs. D. Gatchell, Brooklin, were Sunday din- ner guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Stephenson and friends.
