Reg Rose (Scugog), Durham Region pays the piper but doesn't call the tune. The piper referred to at the Durham Region meeting last Wednesday was the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority, 'who billed the' region $743,000., their share of a $1.5 million capital expenditure for the purchase of properties for three con- servation areas in the region. Counc. Des Newman (Whitby) and Coun. James Potticary (Oshawa) spoke out against the paying of such bills. According to Coun. Newman, the region is "locked into a statutory system that makes conser- vation a regional responsi- bility." He said that the region is locked into paying huge amounts of conservat- ion costs, regardless of whether the region has other priorities. Coun. Potticary took off on a verbal attack on the pro- 220 COCHRANE ST. 'We are fed up with those Conser- vatives," he said. Coun. Michael Breaugh (Oshawa) pointed out, how- ever, that if it didn't want these purchases made, it had the opportunity to do some- thing about it. Ten of the 15 representatives on the auth- ority are appointed by the region, he pointed out. A region representative on the authority, Mr. Breaugh said he was "'getting it from both ends". In one hand, members want and encour- age the purchase of conser- vation areas, then object when they get thg price tag. He pointed out that the purchases should be nothing new to the region, since the minutes from the authority's meetings are always includ- ed in the region's agendas. "Why start objecting now, when the bills come in," he asked. 985-7086 = MAR-LAINE HAND CRAFT BOUTIQUE 160 QUEEN STREET -- PORT PERRY, ONT.
