Don't forget the pot luck supper on Tuesday night, February 25th, this is the new Mens and Womens group, and this will be the first meeting. Everyone is welcome. i Several from Ashburn went to Uxbridge Chalmers Church on Sunday to view the centennial banners. These are banners that were made by people all across Canada to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the- Presbyterian Church in Canada. Mr. Allan Ashton of Wind- sor was home for the week- end and Mr. and Mrs. N. Ashton had the family to- gether at their home for Sunday dinner. ] There were ten tables of Euchre played at the Com- munity Centre on Friday night. The womens high prize went to Wilma Lynde and second to Ruby Bryant. The mens prizes went to John Bright and Jack Honingh. The most lone hands prize went to George Livingston and the door prize to Nelson Cole. Our thought for today is - " Smile. It takes 72 muscles to frown and only 14 to smile. Handicraft Guild 10 years old The Louise Patterson Handicraft Guild celebrated its 10th Anniversary on February 12 at St. John's Presbyterian Church. The celebration started with a buffet luncheon at 12:30. Mrs. Florence Smith made a "delicious Birthday cake and Mrs. Dorothy Naples, one of the Charter Members cut the cake. A short business meeting followed and plans are underway for a Rug and Craft show to be held June 7 at Latcham Centre. Slides of past shows and events of the Guild, as well as, Rug Shows in other centres were enjoyed by those present. The next meeting is on March 12 at 2 o'clock. PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, 'Feb. 9, 1975 -- 9 Bill Kennedy, 1974 president presented a number of awards to weekly newspaper publishers during Ontario Weekly Newspapers Association Silver Jubilee Convention at the Royal York Hotel last week. P. Hvidsten, Star publisher, was among those happy winners and received the awards on behalf of the staff who made the honours possible. Star receives two awards Port Perry Star received a high rating from the judges in the annual newspaper competitions sponsored by Ontario Weekly Newspaper Association. Prizes were presented to the winners at the Silver Jubilee Convention held in the Royal York Hotel, Feb. 13-15 and the Star received first prize in the category emphasizing news from family and home environ- ment, in class three, with circulation from 3,000 to 4,500. (Circulation of the Star is near the 3,800 mark.) Your local newspaper also' placed second in the competition for the "best all round paper' in the same class. Wm. Davis, Premier of Ontario spoke to the 300 delegates and guests at lun- cheon on Friday and on behalf of the Government presented a framed scroll to the Ontario Weekly News- paper Association on the occasion of its Silver Jubilee. Each member of the Assoc- iation, some 250 received a miniature of the same scroll. 19 of the past presidents of 'the Association during the 25 year period attended and received special treatment at the convention. The Star publisher was one of those presidents attending and recipient of a plaque with the following inscription: "In recognition of service as president of the Ontario Weekly Newspaper Associa- tion, 1969'. Other speakers of some distinction addressing the convention were Robert Nix- on MPP, Liberal leader in the Ontario Government, Mayor of Toronto, David Crombie and the president of Ford Company of Canada, Roy F. Bennett. Elected president of Ontario Weekly Newspaper Association for 1975 was Mr. James Dills of the Milton 'anudian Champion, Milton, Ontario.
