? ERY ATT Ls Tf shbednedoda hh Reader's Viewpoint Important information for elderly a Concerned about getting information about benefits to the elderly, Ontario MPP Matthew B. Dymond has provided information about Ontario Tax Credits to the STAR. Dear Mr. Publisher: I enclose herewith an article which I would very much appreciate you finding space for in your valuable paper. I'm very much concerned because quite a number of older people are of the opin- ion that they can't get Ontario Tax Credits unless they have to pay income tax -- this, of course, is not true and I'm trying to get at as many of them as I possibly can through the medium of your paper. Your usual kindness will be very much appreciated. ONTARIO TAX CREDITS It is disturbing to learn that some people, particular- ly among our senior citizens, have been told they do not qualify for Ontario Tax Credits unless they pay income tax -- this is wrong information. Indeed, the Ontario Tax Credit Program is primarily directed to those on low or moderate and fixed incomes, and is geared to helping them most. To claim Ontario Tax Credits, it is necessary to fill out an income tax return, but again, you don't have to pay income tax to be eligible. The rules are simple: WHO CAN CLAIM: Generally speaking, all those who were' living in Ontario on December 31, 1974, and who were 60 years or older on that date (more specific factors influencing eligibility are explained with each Tax Credit). THE THREE CREDITS: A property tax credit which can' be claimed for a principal residence only by homeowners, tenants, roomers and boarders; A sales tax credit which can be claimed by any Ont- ario tax filer over age 16 who is not claimed as a depend- ent; A pensioner tax credit which can be claimed by most Ontario residents, age 65 or over on December 31, 1974. HOW TO APPLY: To claim one or more of the Ontario Tax Credits, you must complete a Federal Income Tax return, even if you don't pay income tax. If you don't receive your tax forms in the mail by the end of January, pick one up TAX States report is incorrect The Editor, Port Perry Star. Subsequent to the article, a few of the more heated debaters worried that indeed, we may have stam- peded the meeting. Thefeé- fore, while on an errand for the Trent Canal Authority regarding this matter, we took time to discuss the community problem with each resident. Unfortunate- ly, this limited space cannot show the depth of thinking and amount of discussion behind this list. We feel the reasons must be presented without the emotionalism attached to the situation by your article. The residents of the area bounded on the west by. County Road No. 2 and on the south by Concession No. 11, both in Scugog Township, and by the Nonquon River on the east and the north, are concerned..... 1. Council for the Township of Mariposa should STOP and evaluate its grasp of the situation. For example, the non-presentation of bylaws from June, 1967, to the Ont- ario Municipal Board is blamed by one council mem- ber on frequent changes in the office staff at Oakwood. Residents feel this should be taken care of before all kinds of irregularities become regularities. 3. A commercially deeded venture is not wanted in a residential area. 4. We feel the Yacht Club is not sufficiently informed about the area as conditions exist all times of the year. 5. Various government agencies like Natural re- sources, Northern and Ind- ian Affairs, and the Trent Canal Authority have only received the Yacht Club pre- sentation. They need time to consider the viewpoints of the residents and the restric- tions of the environment. "6. Further traffic damage to Concession No. 12, east of County Road No. 2, Town- ship of Scugog, is not needed. With ALL but 4 homes in the area polled, only 4.29 per cent of the community were in favour of the Yacht Club's location. Five people were undecided; five were fed up with the controversy and voted neutral. EVERY other remaining homeowner said NO for one or more of the eight reasons above. I have the records to support this data in my home open to perusal. The residents did not give me the right to let copies go on file with any other than the government department involved. Since this is my own summary of the situation, based on the facts I have collected, I feel any personal statement should come only from each individual according to his or her conscience.
