LeMasurier, Director of Special Services with Ontario Housing Corporation acted as chairman during the opening ceremonies and spoke briefly prior to the introduction of the first speaker, Scugog Township Mayor, Lawrence Malcolm. Mr. Malcolm praised those responsible for the initial work prior to the construc- tion, the members of the former Port Perry Council, who took the initiative and then to be continued by the members of Scugog Town- ship. The members of the two councils were present and were introduced to the gathering. Mr. Malcolm said the need for homes of this kind is now in great demand and he hoped that new construction for Scugog Township resi- dents will soon be on the drawing board. The cost of constructing the apartment building was about $330,000. and 90 percent of that amount had been made available as a loan by the Federal Government. He praised the senior citi- zens and said it was about time something was done for them in return for all they had done to benefit the younger people of this country. Dr. M.B. Dymond rep- resenting the Provincial Government spoke at some length and with great enthus- iasm about the project, the residents and the pleasure of having been able to take some part in the realization of the attractive and practi- cal apartment building. He reiterated Mr. Cafik's words giving credit to the fine co-operation of the two Governments responsible for ---- the financing and construc- tion of the homes. Dr. Dymond said the occasion was one of the happiest in his long career. A dream we have waited for a long time to come through. Ten years ago, he continu- ed to say, 37 senior citizens units had been constructed in Canada. Five years later this number was increased to 2,900 and today 20,000 units are in operation. Following the official cere- mony, residents were enter- tained by a choir from R.H. Cornish Public School under the direction of Glenn Taylor accompanied by Mrs. Grace Hastings. They all received warm and lengthy applause for their fine contribution to the event.
