"One of the reasons, we're so happy holding this thing here, is the way people have treated us,' said Steve. "People have been co-oper- ative, particularly. land- owners." He said the co-operation ranges from a municipality donating snow fencing to a good spectator turn-out. Last year about 2,500 attended. * This year the club expects 4000 veople. Attractions at this years event include a demonstrat- ion by a hot-air balloonist. "So if you can't find it," smiles well-known artist (and cyclist) Bill Lishman, "It'll be right under the balloon." Mr. Lishman is an example of the wide range of people who enjoy the sport. Not only does the club's membership stretch from one end of the region to the other, but also includes people from all walks of life, ranging from a mechanic to a dentist. Gone are the days when a motorcycle in the garage meant rocks in the head, according to club members. The image of the cyclist as a troublemaker is gone, said Mr. Salter. The club seems to make a conscientious effort to keep it that way. The club supports several causes and organiz- ations such as Kinsmen and Crippled Children. A group of Crippled Children will be allowed through the gates as guests of the club. Only about a dozen of the club's riders will compete in the event, the rest of the members working behind the scenes to plan, organize, as well as, conduct the races.
