If there's a hard way and an easy way to do things, my. mother always said, I'd do it the hard way. Since | have a great deal of respect for my mother, | try not to disappoint her. She would have been proud of me this weekend. Having smashed another hammer handle and broke the last of the jig saw blades on the six-inch-thick kitchen wall, the Sunday afternoon effort to recess the refrigerator into the adjacent bathroom came to an abrupt halt. Becker's doesn't sell hammer handles, and neither does - Emiel's Place, so | had to find another way. | dug through my inventory of tools to see what | had to work with. Four bent nails, a couple of used bandages, and the two halves of a broken pair of pliers. | No luck. It was then that | remembered the electric drill. 1d broken most of the set of drill bits, but had a Vz inch concrete drill somewhere that | bought once to stir some paint. It was the bathroom that | was painting. Sure enough, | found the drill on my shelf of the medicine chest, underneath a nest of used razor blades. From here on, it was easy. A mere four- hour job. Drill a series of holes in the outline of the door, one next to the other. - Then, with a great heave of the sledge hammer, the door should pop out. We drilled the holes with a bucket of water at the ready. You'd think drills "that go through concrete would go through wood like soft butter, but no such luck. Each hole started a mini fire. The kitchen smelled like a cub pack cook-out. g ' , 0 The drill turning a blackish blue. $ Men's OLS by Lyon S. by | pressed harder. iL - : d Perspiring profusely, and having downed 4 16.95 19.95 8.00 - $10.00 C three gallons of coke, a quart of milk and a C Ladies Oxf \. half-gallon of ice cream after only three hours, | adies Oxfords . gave up. The top of the door and half-way down one side was outlined in dots. For good measure and to eleviate the rage, | picked up the sledge hammer and took a good whack at it anyway. A great chunck of plaster fell off the ceiling. An electric saw | rented Monday, for a couple of bucks, did the job in five minutes. I've nailed the pieces of plaster back into the ceiling, too. Actually, the rented saw operation wl me more than a couple of bucks. You've got to add the price of a piece of 10-foot cable | cut through, and a blown fuse. . The sparks were pretty, though. The motion by council that no action be taken to place the project on the 1975 budget, was passed at the Tuesday meeting of council. Referring to the $750,000. new arena already approved by council, Coun. Don Frew questioned whether the tax- payer should be asked to pay for it. He suggested, how- ever, that instead of the second pad at the new arena that is or will be considered in two or three years, council Paul Arculus appointed to arena committee Paul Arculus has been chosen to represent the Scugog Ratepayers' Associ- ation on the New Arena Committee. Council suggested a Rate- payers representative be ap- pointed following a Rate- payers' request two weeks ago for information about the status of the arena. could consider the install- ation of a separate arena in the Blackstock area. That suggestion came after Coun. Bob Kenny questioned the feasability of using the existing Blackstock Arena. **1 think it would be better to wait two or three years until the other (arena) is well on its way," he suggested, add- ing that a proper arena could then be considered for Black- stock.
