On hand for the Saturday morning opening was M.P. Norm Cafik, representatives of the public works and post office departments, Scugog Mayor Lawrence Malcolm and others. Standing in for E. D. Manchul, regional director of Public Works, Canada, was Gerry Ambridge, district Property Manager. Also unable to attend was the guest speaker, R. A. . Phillips executive director of Herit- age Canada, Ottawa. Mayor Malcolm, in his opening remarks, invited those in attendance to take a dip in the lake if they get too uncomfortable, due to the heat. '"There's no reason to be uncomfortable here," he said. "We have a lake right downtown, and it's quite pure." Mayor Malcolm commend- ed the federal government "and the local people who got behind the project, saying that the federal building such as this one has a tendency to 'set the pattern" for other construction. "If it was ultra modern,' he said, "you prob- ably wouldn't be able to recognize the community in the future." In his remarks, Mr. Cafik said that after he realized, when the project was first suggested, that he could loose as many votes saving the post office as he could tearing it down, he figured he might as well do what he felt was the right way. And that was te keep it, he said, but he still had the Government of Canada to fight. He said the post office helps to preserve the char- acter of Port Perry. 'And that's very important," he said. A reception followed the opening. Ratepayers question use of new arena by public A program outlining how the facility will be used is what Roland Coy of the Scugog Ratepayers' Associ- ation wants before he's pre- ~ pared to give whole-hearted support to the new arena project. Questioning new arena chairman, Howard Hall, at the Thursday public meeting sponsored by the Scugog Ratepayers' Association in Blackstock, Mr. Coy asked why a program showing com- munity participation at the arena hasn't been drawn up, and why Scugog township Council hasn't demanded that such a program be set up. He said the community has been kept in a vacuum since '"'the arena thing" got going, and he said the committee and council are not coming up with answers about fund- ing, and costs to the com- munity. Mr. Coy was concerned about the use of the arena by the general public, and how much of the ice time would be used up by special interest groups such as minor Taine Boies and figure skating. He felt public skating was at a mini- mum at the Port Perry Arena, and used the Black- stock natural ice arena as an example, of a facility that provides more public skating. Howard Hall, on hand to provide an update on the arena project, said the com- mittee had its hand full with getting the arena and raising funds, without going into the arena's programs. He said it would be the responsibility of the arena board to work out a program. He pointed out, however, that there will be two arenas, two ice surfaces to work with, which will certainly result in much more public skating. He said the committee's original idea was to construct a twin-pad arena. "Perhaps we need it now after all," he said. The enormous cost of such atwin-pad facility resulted in the committee's skuttling of the idea. However, it is proposed the arena will be builtinsuch a way as to allow the addition of a second pad when needed. Rather than tear down the old post office building, pressure from local groups resulted in a change of mind by the government--and replaced by a renovation project. It is believed by some that the Port Perry effort has lead the way on a patch followed since by other municipalites. From left, are Public Works Canada Area Manager, J.
