The Whitby Firemen spoiled the home opener when they scored three runs in the eighth inning to give the local club its first loss of the season. The Ballard Lumber Inter- mediate Softball Club are currently in second place in the Oshawa City and District Softball League after one week of play. Ken Davidson, as he did so often last season with the Junior Club, led the hitting with a line-drive home run and a single, Brian Smith had 2 singles as did Gene Hurst, Brent Heard had a double and single, Ken Goreski a long 'home-run, Bob Smith a triple, and Hugh Johnson and Tom Lawrence a single, each. The league this year is using the Designated Hitting rule for league play only and Doug Christie made good use of this to hit a long home run in the seventh inning. Whitby Tiremen 5 Lumbermen 3 The Whitby Tiremen spoil- ed the home opener for the "Lumbermen' on Thursday evening, when they scored three runs in the eighth inning to hand the local club it's first loss of the young season. Laurie Williams pitched well for the Lumbermen until the eighth inning when he tired and allowed a couple of walks and his teammates committed two costly errors behind him. Ken Goreski finished up in relief for Port Perry. Dave Cranston was the winning pitcher for Whitby as he. took over for "Lefty" Randy Mulroy who started the game. The Tiremen had only four hits in this game with Jim Spiers and Ken Stratton col- lecting a double each. .
