Canoe race still on continued river levels to a point where a canoe could be launched. "One or two days of rain is all we need now," he said. Usually, the 18-mile course follows the river for about 12 miles, and the lake section is the last run to the finish line at Palmer Park. Advance registrations are coming in at a faster rate than last year, he said, and in view of participation growth in past years, the committee is prepared to handle some 200 canoeists. Some 150 raced the Nonquon last year. But luch has a great deal to do with the successful run- ning of such an event, said Mr. Brock, with the major factor being the weather conditions gn the day of the race. "We've been very lucky so far," he said. The major money-raiser for the society, the race provides funds for next year's budget, so the effects of an unsuccessful wouldn't be felt until the following year. About $2,500 was raised last year not only by local canoeists, but from people as far away as, London and Carlton Place. The race is * gaining popularity, said Mr. Brock. Already this year, an advance registration from Waterloo has been received. About 50 per cent of the contestants, said Mr. Brock, are from surfounding and "outside municipalities such as Oshawa, Peterborough, Uxbridge, Whitby, and others. Not a likely sponsor, thinks Mr. Brock. Perhaps one reason for its success is the enthusiasm and participation of others in the community. There are members involved in the race that have nothing at all to do with the society. "'Let's face it," said Mr. Brock, "this is a darn good sports event, as well as a fund- raiser." Other groups also help out, like the Port Perry Yacht Club, who operate check points for the race. Registration for family, and 14 and under groups seem to be particularly pop- ular ones, according to Mr. Brock. Not only are canoe- ists entering, but they're apparently serious about it, judging from the number practicing. Mr. Brock spot- ted 16 on one tour of the area. The Port Perry Chamber of Commerce has been busy these past few months preparing for a major community promotional campaign. campaign involved the development of a logo. Not only does the campaign involve promotional efforts for the rest of the year, but the Chamber is considering 4 extending the project into 1976 as well. The logo, it is expected, will become a common item in the Port Perry area, in the form of window signs, stickers, and placards.
