by Jean Bolan Fellow consumers, when the Metric system was im- posed upon us we had no choice in the matter. Whether the voting public was for or against it was of no importance, for, as we are all aware the country is in the process of "going metric". Now we have yet another system being forced upon us .. unless any one that can pen a letter of protest. do so immediately. Itis not an idle rumor but a definite fact that supermarkets shall abolish the old cash register and in its place we shall have com- puters. No longer will each item be stamped with the price. It is supposed to be under the articles on each shelf .. if there is room to price and name each brand - of soup and the kind of soup contained in different cans. This also applies to the . countless numbers of other articles. The Nestleton Women's In- stitute wrote a letter of pro- test to the people responsible for this "brainwave" but received no reply. A letter was then sent to our local M.P. Allen Law- rence and he said, Quote "if the consumer wishes to pro- test this unwanted system they had better act promptly as this system has been tabled since May 1st". Mr. Lawrence assured each con- sumer that he will be only too pleased to receive letters of protest and shall respond to them immediately. Mr. Sydney Handleman, the Minister of Consumer and Commercial Relations said, Quote, "If the con- sumer does not complain and quickly pertaining to this system that he himself shall for he has been toying with the idea of doing so. Cer- tainly these machines have to be fed, this shall require trained personnel ... and where do the funds come from for this type of train- ing? Mr. Lawrence and Mr. Handleman have both stated that to date they have not received enough letters of protest. It is quite possible that not too many consumers are aware of this new system. They ask that we write .. not tomorrow but immediately, for then they may act upon squelching what they term an idiotic idea. Mr. Sydney Handleman, Minister of Consumer and Commercial Relations, Queen's Park, Toronto. It would be dreadfully em- barrassing if when we take our purchases to a computer and are shocked at the total and find we are short of the required funds. I have writ- ten 'this by request and because I think the idea is ridiculous also. This is a Democracy in which we live so speak up, if you are against this latest idea. The above mentioned gentlemen said that they want more complaints and in a hurry. Now for some more pleas- ant news. In spite of the murcky appearance of our Lake Scugog, it has been tested and is pollution free. One gentleman sent samples of his well water and some from the lake and he was told his well water was not fit for human consumption, but Scugog is. So Mom if the little ones swallow a mouthf- ul of lake water there is no reason for panic. Well .. good NEWS Mr. Ron Clark, Toronto is visiting his uncle and aunt, (continued on page 28) old Bell a ee | Canada did it again, at least in our area. On Saturday morning | went to use our telephone and there was not a sound of any description. It was as though the wires had been severed. Countless people went to Caesarea to phone repair service and we were informed that it shall be repaired before 5 o'clock on Monday. O, how many many times we have all heard that one. We dicided to foret it until Monday but on Saturday evening a man, white and shaken knocked on our door begging for the use of our phone because he had hit a deer... with a Volks- wagen and had to walk approx. '2 mile to our home, only to be told that the line was as per usual 'out of order'. I left my husband to attend to the man and drove around looking for a phone and the nearest working one was about two miles away. Thank heaven that poor man was not too seriously injured although his car was a com- plete wreck. Just a thought The confidence of children is a very fragile thing. What a pity that so many adults destroy it. Superior Aluminum 94 ELLA STREET -- PORT PERRY, ONT.
