Janice is a graduate of Port Perry High School and a former piano student of Mrs. Anne Wallace. Jill Quick, daughter of local resident Don Quick, a former Pickering coucillor and the first vice-chairman of the County Board of Edu- cation, graduated last week from Brock University's College of Education with a Bachelor of Education degree. Last year she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Brock and will take up teaching duties with the Lincoln Board of Educat- ion in September. A Port Perry resident, Don Quick, publishes business maga- zines. Susan Annette McColl, Nestleton, was one of 500 to receive her Bachelor of Arts Degree at Trent University, Peterborough, Ont., Friday, June 6. The South Ontario 4H Beef Club met at the farm of Don Gibson, Ashburn on May 26 for their regular monthly meeting. John Rutledge, club president opened the meeting with 14 members present. Jody MacNeill read the minutes and later a class of Angus steers were judged. . John Finlay, Agriculture representative, gave a quiz on the common diseases in beef cattle. Next meeting will be held at the farm of Art Richardson. Date will be decided later. At the Spring Convocation at the University of Guelph on Wednesday, May 21, Susan L. Cochrane, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Cochrane, R.R. 2, Port Perry, received an Honours Degree, Bachelor of Applied Science. Donald MacDonald, MPP, former leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party, will be the guest speaker at a Durham North Riding Assoc- iation meeting next Monday, June 16. The meeting will be held at Uxbridge Secondary School at 8 p.m. Mr. Mac Donald will talk about prob- lems confronting the com- munity when urban develop- ment spreads into rural areas. An executive to serve the new provincial riding of Durham North will also be elected at the meeting. P. Hvidsten, publisher of the STAR, returned last week from a three week vacationin his native Norway. He visited friends and family at various points in the country including the capital city, Oslo. The highlight of his trip was to the city of Bergen, on the west coast, where for three days hePattended the annual Spring Festival, taking in a couple of stage plays, concerts and art shows. The trip across the country from Oslo to Bergen was covered in seven hours, starting at sea level and rising to a height of almost 4,000 feet through beautiful and "rugged mountain scenery. Douglas Holtby, son of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Holtby, Port Perry, graduated from the University of Guelph on May 21st with an Honours Bache- lor of Science Degree in Zoology. He is presently employed with the Ministry of Natural Resources at Kapaskasing, Ontario. Members of the Legion Ladies Auxiliary placed fifth in the Regional Cribbage Tournament held in Acton on Saturday. Those competing were, Florence Mason, Mary Hawes, Beverley Manns and Clara Warren. The Port Perry Lions Club realized approximately $145. at their food booth on Sat. at the lakefront. Robert David Layzell received his degree of Bache- lor of Arts in Psychology at the Convocation exercises which took place on May 25 at Kitchener Memorial Audi- torium. Attending were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Layzell, and sister, Miss Marion Layzell of 67 Union Ave., Port Perry. TEXACO 257 Scugog St. Port Perry Phone: 985-7262 A very pleasant afternoon was spent at the Scout Hall on Sunday June 1st. when about 40 relatives of Mrs. Marion Rowland and Mrs. Greta St. John gathered to honour the twins on the occasion of their 75th birthday. They were born on Scugog Island on May 31, 1900, to Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Foster. Two friends also in atten- dance were Mrs. Tot Hayden and Mrs. Mabel Graham. The afternoon was spent in visiting, followed by a boun- teous potluck dinner. Each lady was presented with a floral oil painting done by the late Mrs. Edna McLaren, a life-long friend. Mrs. Don Card of Epsom and Mrs. Clara Warren, Port Perry have just returned from visiting relatives and friends in Saskatewan and Winnipeg. 1975 DISTANCE TABLE SHOWS KILOMETERS Distances appear in both kilometers and miles for the first time in the new 1975 highway Distance Table now available from the Ministry of Transportation and Com- munications. Sport Shirts bay Miss Susan Shetler, 22, of 159 Guelph St., Oshawa, was presented with a cheque for $50. from PORT PERRY STAR publisher P. Hvidsten last week, after her entry in the Hometown Newspaper contest was picked as winner among the many submitted to the STAR. A college graduate and now a secretary, Miss Shetler has tried a bit of writing before, mainly poetry. The article has been entered in a national contest, where a win could earn her $400. The article appears on page 23.
