The Port Perry United Church, in its present locat- ion at the corner of Lilla and Queen Streets, was formerly the Methodist Church build- ing until the Union of June 10th, 1925. Preparations for the erect- ing of the present structure were started in 1884, when the lot on which it stands was bought in November. The real cause of starting the Church was the union between the Canada Metho- dists and the Methodist Epis- copals. Prior to this, the Canada Methodists had wor- shipped in what was the "old" Roman Catholic Church and the Methodist Episcopals held services in a building which has since been demolished on the corner of Queen and Caleb Streets. The corner stone of the new chyrch was laid on July 2nd, 1885. The cost of the building was less than $14,000, includ- ing the organ; and the church was free from debt within ten years of its' erection. The Church was completed and opened on January 22nd, 1886. Three special Services of Worship were held on this day. E An outstanding feature of the Church History was the holding of the Bay of Quinte Conference in Port Perry in 1901. On Sunday, February 1st, 1925, Rev. A. E. Thornley, six elders and over one hundred members and adherents of St. John's Presbyterian Church anticipating the con- sumation of Church Union, on June 10th, 1925, entered into fellowship with the Methodist Church to constitute the Port Perry. United Church. The Prince Albert Charge was added to the Port Perry Pastoral Charge on July 1st, Rev. Prof. Kingsley Joblin, left, was the guest speaker at the 50th Anniversary service held at the Port Perry United Church on Sunday. The present minister, Rev. Robert G. Brawn is seen with Rev. Joblin. 1926, during the ministry of Rev. William Higgs. Port Perry United Church celebrated it's Golden Jubilee Anniversary Ser- vices Sunday, January 12 and 19; 1936. During the year 1940, con- siderable alterations were undertaken within the church building. The basement was thoroughly redecorated. Later in the year, the choir loft was enlarged and the seating rearranged. The organ was rebuilt and electri- fied, the consol being moved to the front of the loft, and the Cathedral Chimes installed. The Diamond Jubilee Anni- versary was celebrated with two special Services of Wor- ship, January 20 and 27, 1946. During the intervening years, Port Perry United Church grew in numbers of 'members and adherents. In 1968, extensive renovat- ions to the Sanctuary, plus the addition of a Christian Education Wing, were under- taken. This project was completed at a cost of $103,000. The final payment date is December 1st, 1977. Sunday, Oct. 27, 1968, Port Perry United Church held a service of Rededication of the Church Sanctuary after renovations; dedication of the Christian Education Centre and a Service of reconsecration of the Congre- gation. During the year 1972, it was discovered after an extensive inspection, that the present Manse would not meet set standards as a home for the Pastor of Port Perry United Church. A committee was formed to explore the possi- bility of selling the Manse and purchasing a new one. A new Manse was bought and the old parsonage has since been sold at a differ- ence of $13,200. A canvass was held to raise the out- standing debt. To date over $15,000 has been given to this project. Port Perry United Church is continuing to function and grow under the leadership of the present Minister, Rev. Robert G. Brawn, as a place where people may gather to Worship and Glorify God.
