. Sidney Handleman, Ontar- io's Consumer Minister, today warned Ontario home owners to exercise caution in their energy-saving efforts this winter. The Minister's comments came as he drew attention .t6~ some of the suggestions made in '100 Ways to Save Energy and Money in the Home', a book- let produced by the federal Department of Energy, Mines and Resources. "My Ministry's Energy Safety Branch has gone over this booklet very carefully, "and they feel that although it isinmany ways a very useful publication, it makes some suggestions which are poten- tially dangerous,' the Minis- ter said. "We feel that there is no way that an untrained 26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednsséays Sept. 10, 1975 Ens: erve energy, person should perform some - of the adjustments to fur- naces and other home appliances as '100 Ways to Save Energy' suggests. Simi- larly, we feel that the booklet does not place sufficient emphasis on the need for 'adequate ventilation for fuel- burning appliances." "For example, on page 24 "of '100 Ways to Save Energy', the home owner is advised to adjust the furnace burner air shutter, and on page 29, the owner is told to adjust the furnace burner air setting," Mr. Handleman siad. "The Energy Safety Branch staff feel very strongly that, unless you know exactly what you are doing, you should leave these settings alone. Thesé adjustments should be made only by qualified ser- vice personnel." Mr. Handleman explained that improper air supply adjustment, as well as in- adequate ventRation, can cause the appliance flame to produce deadly quantities of carbon monoxide, an odour- less, colourless, poisonous 'gas. "Adequate ventilation is extremely important," the . Minister said. "Last winter we had a number of cases in the province where people were poisoned™ by carbon monoxide because they had sealed their homes too tightly . against drafts." Mr. Handleman said that '100 Ways to Save Energy' also suggested that owners read their furnace or app- but be careful liance manuals before per- forming any of the suggested adjustments. "We think that this is a little unrealistic," he. said, homes, particularly older onés, the owners' manual was lost or thrown away years ago. I don't think we can assume that everyone keeps their furnace manual available for ready refer- ence.' "We are particularly con- - cerned with the suggestions in this booklet because over 200,000 of them have been distributed in Ontario. Be- cause it is a government publication, people will be inclined to believe that the suggestions the booklet makes are abso- lutely safe. This just isn't the "since in many - " Minister "Ontario Government is vital- 'we feel that ™ case with * wh Ways to Save Energy'," the Minister said. "The federal Department of Energy, Minés and Re- sources has agreed to make changes infuture printings of this booklet, but we are con- cerned about the problems that the 200,000 copies in Ontario could cause this winter, Mr. Handleman "added. "I would like to stress that we are not suggesting that people should waste energy or fuel in their homes," the concluded. 'The ly concefned about energy conservation. The Energy Management Program we have set up in Ontario aims to ' reduce the total demand for energy in all sectors of our economy Br! the next decade, and it is obvious that substantial energy saving can be realized in the home." "What we are saying 'is this: if 'you are concerned -about the efficiency of your gas or oil-fired appliances, leave the adjustments to trained personnel wherever possible. Pleasesave energy, but at the same time, please be careful."
