Reader's Viewpoint | Reflections on the proposed 'Pen' " Dear Editor: ith regard to the pro- posed Penitentiary to be built in our town of Port Perry, I would 'like to voice an opinion. / Our town, ------ is a sleepy, > "friendly. community over- looking Lake Scugog. Many of us have settled here main- ly because of the homey atmosphere. You wander uptown to shop, and linger on the streets, greeting your friendly neighbours. Most faces are familiar, and people greet you cheerfully by name. In a town of 3,000 people, most countenances are, well-known. newspaper, the Port Perry Star. Within its pages of local news, most names and places are also recognizable. At night you can sit in the park by the lake and catch reflections on e water; maybe dreaming a secret reverie. Walk up any street and feel safe. Most strangers are tourists, and delighted to ; \_be part of this friendly atmosphere. Maybe some of us do not like the insecure -feeling which may prevail with a maximum security prison in our midst. Doors would probably be locked more often, and strarigers may be suspiciously regarded. Gone would be the carefree small- town feeling, as many sub- divisions and - shopping centres are planned around this proposed industry. I myself would be afraid. Mr. Sam Brown from the Properties Department of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture outlined the need for this programme as at the present time there are no host families in this area. Visitors from urban centres and from all walks of life spend time living with the host family. Most of the visiting takes place during the summer months, but some host families are offer- ing facilities on a 'yearly basis. Host families are expected to provide adequate facilities for their guests.. Occasionally health author- ities will visit the premises. Thirty thousand brochures are distributed each year giving details of the host families' facilities. The minimum cost is $95.00 per person per week.
