28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1975 Lake Scugog water quality worries Lindsay superintendent be Lack of rain this past season is the reason for a seven-inch drop in the Lake Scugog water level, accord- ing to Lindsay town and, Trent-Severn waterway officials. Lindsay has a vested inter- est in the lake, since the water from the Scugog River provides the community's drinking water. The water level now is Postal strike could interfere with campaign The possibility of a drawn out postal service interup- tion and its possible effect on this year's Christmas Seal Campaign was discussed at a special meeting of the Durham Region T.B. and R.D. Association. Convened by president Mrs. M.B. Dymond and Christmas Seal Chairman Don Crosier, the meeting discussed just what the or- ganization would do in case of a prolonged halt in postal service. The organization decided to 'play it by ear" and make up the envelopes as usual at the end of this- month. If a strike is in progress at that time, the organization will hold on to the envelopes for two weeks. 3 If by that time the strike is not over, only then will the association consider alterna- tive distribution methods. The decision was made so that the Christmas Seal cam-- paign does not interfere with other campaigns, such as the United Appeal. Antique Show (continued) she does not have any idea about the exact amount of sales. "I don't think I have a right to ask exhibitors how much they made," she said. The quality of the show was obvious, "'as good as 1 had hoped," she said. At least two items were sold to museums,' she said. Mrs. Calder will take little credit for the success. "It was the dealers who made the show the success it was.: It is to their credit that the show went so well." It will be held again next year. 4 sufficient to supply the needs of the community, according to Lindsay water super- intendent Bob Reynolds. What does bother the offical is the question of water quality, rather than quantity. A deluge would wash down a backlog of sewage. Rain is needed, he pointed out, but several gentle rainfalls rather than a downpour. According to Trent-Severn Waterway water control manager Bruce Kitchen, a computer is used to regutdte the level of -water in the Kawartha Lakes and the Trent River so that the canal system will have sufficient water in it for boats during the navigation season. He said in order to keep the level in the canal system up, water has to be stored during the spring runoff for use in the summer. The water is mainly stored in 40 Hali- burton lakes, all of which are controlled by dams. By June 15, the lakes are nearly full and are navigable, On June 1 the process of drawing water from the Hali- burton Lakes into the canal system is started. . This procedure is continued throughout the summer. Mr, Kitchen said if rainfall is heavy less water is drawn from the Haliburton Lakes. If rainfall is light more water is drawn from the northern lakes. He said the Lindsay dam was closed in mid-May and has been closed ever since because Scugog Lake is a basin by itself and water from the horth cannot be put intoit. The water would have to be pumped into. Scugog Lake but that is impossible. "The Lindsay dam is closed in the spring to keep the- spring runoff in Scugog Lake - otherwise: the 'lake would be nothing but mud." Mr. Kitchen said . the /if$. "If there is not as much rain falling into the lake as there is water evapor- ating, then the level will go down." The decision to close the "Lindsay dam in May was based on the 'récommend- ation of consultants.
