18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Nov. 5, 1975 Sports Legionaires show great promise Open season with two victories Tuesday, October 28th saw the Pee Wee Legionaires win the opening game of their schedule, defeating West Rouge on their home ice by a 5 to 3 count. It was the third period. before Port got rolling and out scored West Rouge 4to 1. The first two periods were scrambly hockey as both teams had trouble moving the puck on a rather sticky ice surface. West Rouge were first on the score sheet as their captain, Mark Mackei beat Franssen from close range at the 3:10 mark, for the only goal in the first period. Sandison got Port back on even terms midway in the second period as he scored on passes from Horton and Wilbur. The Legionaires enjoying a man advantage late in the second period were guilty of giving away the puck in their own end and West Rouge were quick to take advantage firing one past Williams fora 2to 1lead. Potts evened the score at two a piece early in the third period with Andrews and Wilbur drawing assists. Robinson, who was easily the best man on the ice in the third ' period, charged the tempo of the game as he: picked up a pass from Jones, rambled right to the goal- tenders door step before feed- ing a perfect goal mouth pass to Storry, who flipped the puck into the net. Gould was back minutes later, assisted by Johnson and Vernon to score what proved to the winning goal. West Rouge cameback and with less than two minutes remaining in the game, Mackie got in behind our defence and beat Williams with a good wrist shot. Johnson completed the scor- ing ashefired one in, unassis- ted, with just 26 seconds remaining on the clock. Wednesday October 29th, the Legionaires made it two wins in successive nights as they beat Uxbridge 5 to 4. Port out hustled Uxbridge for the balance of the first period, pumping in 3 more goals to take a 4 to 2 lead as the first period ended. Scoring plays were Sandison from Wilbur; Gould from Johnson and Vernon; and Storry from Horton. The game slowed some- what in the second period with Uxbridge counting the only goal. Uxbridge employ- ed strong forechecking dur- ing the second half of the game keeping Port hemmed in their own end on several occasions. They tied the game at four a piece just past the 9:00 minute mark in the third period. At 11:53, Horton got the winner assist- ed by Johnson. Although allowing 2 goals each, Williams and Franssen played steady goal and made several big saves. In the Legionaires only pre-schedule game, they went down to defeat as the Oshawa Country Strings won 6 to 3. Port started off at home on October 29 against Uxbridge. Port opened the scoring in the first period on a goal by Howard Lee unassisted and increased the lead in the second period on a goal by Robby Long assisted by Jeff Johpstone. Uxbridge closed the gap at the 1:20 mark of the third period making the score two to 'one for the Malmont gang. Port again regained a two goal advant- age at the 3:04 mark on a goal by Brian Henricks un- assisted. At the 6:02 mark, Uxbridge scored their final _goal of the night-with Port answering with two goals, one be Jamie Lane assisted by Robby Burnett and one by Brian Henrick, unassisted. Final score Malmont Farms 5, Uxbridge 2. On Hallowe'en night the Malmont gang travelled to Uxbridge and they came away with a two to one win. Uxbridge opened the scoring _ in the first period and this stood up until the 5:13 mark of the second period when Howard Lee tied the score assisted by Russell Jones. At the 2:11 mark of the final period, Jamie Lane gave the | local gang the winning goal * assisted by Darren Desautel and Robby Burnett. To finish off the first week . of the schedule, Port travel- led to Pickering on Novem- ber 1, and came away with a tie. Malmont Farms opened the scoring at the 1:04 mark of the first period on an unassisted 'goal by Brian Henricks. Port went ahead two to nothing at the 1:53 mark of the second period on a goal by Howard lee, assis- ted by Steve Lee and Stan Glass. Pickering got their first goal at the 3:51 mark of the second period on a deflection and tied the score at the -:20 mark of the third period while Port was short- handed. Final score Port Perry 2, Pickerin 2. Playing goal for the Mal- mont Farms gang were Jerry Jackman and Paul Bateman who both turned in good performances allowing only five goals in three games, The Malmont team is in for a good season and the boys would really appreciate a . large turnout at the games to cheer them on.
