I. oF \ aA AL ei EEN AEF LAU AR 28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Nov. 12, 1975 Lions Club Blitz for the Blind Friday, Saturday Headquarters for the Port Perry Lions Club "Blitz for the Blind' on November 14 and 15 will be at 191 Queen Street, and organizers plan to + offer several exhibits and displays dealing with the work of the Canadian Nation- al Institute for the Blind. Lions have been backed by the CNIB ever since the club was organized, and in the Peterborough CNIB District (serving Durham Region, Northumberland, Peter- borough, Victoria and Hali- burton) there are approxi- mately 700 blind persons that take advantage of CNIB pro- grams, Blindness can strike any- one and every day in Canada the Canadian National Insti- tute for the Blind adds six new names to its registry. There are more than 30,000 blind persons known to CNIB in Canada and in Ontario, approximately 10,000. In the district as in the country, the organization is ---continually meeting -new-.. blind persons. In most cases the people in the process of losing their vision turn to CNIB. There is no other. CNIB offers special rehabili- tation, counselling service, as well as specific services such as the white cane, the their home, to sense problems and to travelinsafety. The Rehabil- itation Teacher works with the blind person first of all in then in their yard, then in their block of their town or community. Gradually the world of the blind can expand as confid- ence and experience increase so that mobility too is an important topic for the rehabilitiation of the newly blind. "Often the teacher works with the blind by teaching them hobbies to occupy their spare hours. This may include leather lacing, basketry, crocheting, knitting, macrame toname a "few. Our blind workers can become proficient and can enjoy putting in their spare hours through these crafts, The Canadian National Institute for the Blind has been providing special read- ing material since 1918. Even before CNIB was formed the Canadian Free Library for the Blind was publishing books in braille. by hand. Publishing braille by hand'is extremely. slow and braille itself is extremely bulky. It was only a very limited number of blind persons who could use the early books. Canada was one of the first countries in the world to grant frée mailing privileges to reading material for the blind - whether it 'be' in braille, on talking books, records or on tape cassettes. The cassette was large and heavy and approximately 1968 saw the Library again converting to a small type of cassette. The new cassette has 6 tracks. cach track containing two hours of recording, It is this present cassette that the Library sends out through the mail to the blind readers of Canada, : Whether your taste be with Shakespeare, Dickens, His- tory, Science or Murder Mysteries, you can enjoy recreation reading from CNIB"s Library. : The CNIB asks-the public for assistance in helping CNIBkeepthisservicegoing. The Adjustment Training Course has some organized classes and some informal discussion groups. At the end of the 12-weeks, a person has made new friends but has gained a great deal of confidence and experience as ..a blind person. _ Another aim of the. CNIB. Si to instill confidence into the newly blind. The CNIB_ Rehabilitation Teacher is a blind person herself or himself. She visits the blind in the home upon request of that person. Either the blind person has a problem or an interest and the CNIB-Rehabilitiation Teacher can help. The Rehabilitation Teacher visits the client regularly. -Some-™ - times the teacher is called upon to teach braille but this is in special cases where the blind person has a great deal of determination and has a need and a use for the braille system. Braille requires sensitive fingers and a great deal of memory work so unless there is keen desire, braille is difficult to learn. The CNIB teacher will teach typing. Sometimes a blind person for communi- cations, wishes to learn to type. No special typewriters are used and there are no special markings. It is simply a matter of memoriz- ing the home keys. Each finger on your hand has its particulary keys to look after. A blind person with determination and practice can become a skilled and efficient typist. Very often, the Rehabilitation Teacher will give the basics of mobility training, of learning to use the white cane, tips of how to act on the street, how os pi) 1H 1%: & DATES 100s.
