There is No Place like Our Place to find Your Place Offices to serve you: Port Perry -- 985-7215 Whitby -- 668-8848 Oshawa -- 576-8531 MARION HOPKINS Sales Manager Bus: 985-7215 Res: 985-3749 Turning off Christmas lights before retiring is not only a good safety practice but also a wise energy con- servation measure, accord- ing to Ontario Hydro. In order to conserve energy, Hydro and the Min- _istry of Energy are both appealing to householders to wait until after the dinner hour to turn on Christmas lights, and to make sure they are turned off again at bedtime. Hydro itself will have a - modest outdoor display at its Toronto head office loc- ation and the same practice will be followed in its seven regions across the province. Decorative lighting will be turned on after 7:00 p.m. and off by midnight. Hydro's electrical inspect- ion department notes no one can blame shoppers for try- ing to squeeze a little more out of their Christmas bud- gets this year, but warns of ignoring potential hazards concerning older festive lighting supplies. "An annual danger is that some householders will try to 'make do' with Christmas tree lights and outdoor dis- plays which have already been used for several sea- sons," Jim Little, supervis- ing electrical approvals inspector, says. "If your lights have been used before, examine them carefully, especially around the base of each socket, and discard any set that has worn insulation, damaged sockets or a faulty plug. At- tempting to repair light sets by splicing or taping worn wiring can be dangerous," Mr. Little warns. "When buying lights and appliances, shoppers should check to be sure they bear the CSA mark of approval, he adds. "Lights approved for indoor use should never be used owtdoors." Strings of lights should be securely fastened and cords should be positioned so that they, cannot be bumped or tripped over. Plugs should not be overloaded with two or three sets of lights. Leaving a light socket empty after removing a burned out or broken bulb can also be hazardous. The empty socket may tempt an inquisitive child to put his finger il the socket and receive a severe shock. Care should also be taken Christmas lighting is potentially dangerous gt when using metal reflectors or metallic garlands on trees. They can become live if they contact an empty socket or damaged wire. . One hazardous product which appeared on the mar- ket this season is a plug-in chirping ornament for Christmas trees. It has now been removed from store shelves on the order of Hydro's inspection staff. The ornament is a 23, inch open mesh plastic sphere which contains a piece of aluminum foil, a tiny speak- er and an electronic circuit package having exposed live 120 volt terminals. + ""The foil could contact the live terminals and create a definite shock hazard." Stitchers attend Achievement Day Six members of the Port Perry Stitchers and their two leaders attended the Achievement Day held in Uxbridge on Saturday, December 6, 1975. Each member exhibited her record book on "A Touch of Stitchery', a learn- ing stitches article and a free choice article. The Club prepared an exhibit called Colour and Colour Schemes. Beverley Mulder made the comment on this exhibit assisted by Michelle Anderson. The morning activities in- cluded the judging of a class of place mats, planning a wall hanging and the evalu- ation of a "Free Choice" article. Some fifteen different clubs took part from Ontario Centre Area. Members had the opportunity to examine the work of all these girls. Each member receiving" credit for this unit received a silver spoon. These were awarded to Janice McHugh, Lisa Pelletier, Michelle Anderson, Barbara Webster, Beverley Mulder and Carol Lane. Beverley Mulder also received a certificate on the completion of two units. Miss Dodd received a certificate for ten years as a 4H Homemaking leader. They look forward to the project in the new year, "Let's Bake Bread'. Alice Dodd A a "-- Rs ~~ Xe: -- > a rs rey 22.
