If indeed the penitentiary service is looking for a- second site in this area, other than the site for the reception centre, indications are the move would be opposed locally. Scugog councillors have already based their support on the fact that it is a reception centre, as has Uxbridge. "We've approved a recep- said Mayor Lawrence Malcolm of Scugog. "I find it very difficult to speak 'for six other people," he said, but expressed doubt about the possibility of 'council's acceptance of another type of institution in the township. - Equally as skeptical is Ux- bridge Mayor Carl Puter- bough. Uxbridge took an active, aggressive part in getting the penitentiary ser- vice to consider the town- ship 'as. a site, yet Mayor Puterbough doubts if council would go for anything but a reception centre. Both - mayors agree that a further motion by council would have to come before any such institution is built. According to M.P. Norm Cafik's executive assistant, John Biermans, the depart- ment of public works have completed a study of a num- ber of sites in the area, and that penitentiary service people will sit down soon with both Mr. Cafik and " local officials, as "they 'are ' anxious to get this thing underway'. He said the service is try- ing to avoid the Innisfil situ- ation again, and will discuss with Mr. Cafik how to go about it. Mr. Biermans agreed that local approval ~ would be required before an institution other than a reception centre is built here. Mayor Malcolm said that between five and eight sites have been forwarded to the public works department for Region business survey Effective December 8th, 1975, the staff of The Durham Board has started a Region- wide survey of selected hus- inesses, parents, students and teachers to determine the strengths and gaps in current programs as they are seen hy the users of the service. Included in the sur- vey will be hoth public and private sector employees in Durham. The project is under the direction of Mr. N. Wortman Commercial Director of Brock High School and Mr. R. Summers, from Uxbridge Secondary School, on sec- ondment to The Board as a Consultant in Business Edu- cation. This is the first compre- hensive survey of its kind in Durham and will parallel, in part, an earlier study in the - Kitchener-Waterloo district. The results of the survey will be reported to The Board by June, 1976, and the results will be available for study and implementation by teachers throughout Dur- ham. consideration, but he added that it doesn't mean council has approved the sites. He said that once public works and penitentiary people have come up with acceptable site, local council will be approached for their ; input and approval. . Scugog, Mayor Malcolm will tell you, still has the: final say about what goes and what doesn't. : Sr. Citizens celebrate Christmas On December 11th, 142 Port Perry Senior Citizens met at Latcham Centre for their annual Christmas din- ner.
