PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1975 -- 5 Reader's Viewpoint . Urges people to renew fight against Lilla Street widening LJ J LJ Dear Editor: : I thought that you might be interested in this letter which I wrote to the regional government opposing the widening of Lilla Street. . I do hope that people haven't been discouraged by the region's response to their expressed opposition to this project, and will take up the fight against it again with renewed vigor. The irresponsible and unrespon- sive character of this region- al government is despicable. We deserve this undemo- cratic style of governing though, if we remain passive under it. 'To be worthy of rights we must exercise them and fight for them when we lose them. ° : I know many people on Lilla Street. I call on each and every one of them to make their views known to the region. I hope that all those people on Lilla-who I. don't know will do the same. In fact, I hope-everyone in town realizes the impor- tance of this matter and will express himself to the - region. This is a test case with far-reaching impli- cations for the whole town, not just the lilla Street neighbourhood. It will determine the effectiveness of our voice in our affairs for the future. If we demon- strate to regional govern- ment that we will tolérate being manipulated, it will be twice as difficult to secure recognition of our views the next time we have a view- point to relay to them. If we do not stand for being manipulated, we will ensure participation in deciding the fate of our town. Now, if- ever, is a time to-act. Aux armes citoyens! Yours sincerely, David Litt Dec. 5, 1975. Regional Council of Durham 7 Whitby, Ont. "C Dear Sirs: I didn't know who, in parti- cular, to write to in regard to this matter, so I'm direct- ing it to you, the council in general, confident that it will be channeled to the proper individuals and as- - surred of due consideratjon. The purpose of this letter is to state my opposition to the widening. of Lilla Street in - Port Perry. First of all, there is no need for a parking lane on Lilla, unless, of course, the region has secret plans for the street which would require this feature. Lilla is almost completely a residential street. Very few: of the houses on the street have no driveways. I have lived in Port Perry for almost twenty years and I know that nowhere on Lilla is there anyone who regularly parks his car on the street. The non-residential .build- ings on Lilla are amazingly few. They are, from north to south, the nursing home, a gas station, the Scout Hall," the Town Hall, the United Church, the Pentecostal Church, and the Legion's building. The nursing home and the Legion have ade- quate parking, and I can't see that the gas station needs more. The Scout Hall has room to expand its park- ing lot, if the rare instances of parking problems there prove this action necessary. The only area which might present a parking problem is near the Queen and Lilla intersection. Here the United Church, the Pente- costal Church, and the Town Hall close together can draw enough cars to line the street from time to time. The two churches usually are responsible for drawing cars at times when the street traffic is not heavy, like Sunday mornings. How- ever, I know that the plan- ners down there with you like to solve all our prob- lems, even Sunday morning parking problems, clearing up those infrequent parking problems arising when the churches have some funct- ion during the rest of the week, and the potential problems when the Town Hall gets going. I am not going to outline any of my suggestions to solve these problems because the insti- tutions involved could accuse me of meddling with their property and politics. Irealize that the business of -govern- _ ment is dog eat cat, and that you don't like to take things for granted, but in this case, for my sake, you'll have to take my word for it. After all, I'm sure that the insti- tutions involved would work . something out between themselves, before they would want you to go to all the trouble of constructing over a mile of parking lane, just for them. A cynical view of your persistence in giving us a wider Lilla Street is quite widely held in Port Perry. You" must remember that we, the people affected, told you in no uncertain terms that we do not want a wider street, although we would go along with a reconstruction concurrent with the install- ation of storm sewers, if it is necessary. Some people are sure ' that we are being mislead into accepting a parking lane so that you can get your foot in the door, so to speak; the first step in creating a major traffic route right through the -centre of our town, not for our use, but for the use of out-of ;towners streaking north' on Fridays and south on Sunday nights. I would indeed by dismayed and sur- prised to find out that this was your purpose. The days of dividing towns with a moving wall of traffic are history, or so I thought. The accepted modern approach is to build a bypass of the town. Now I know that this is expensive, but I'm not saying that this should be done right now. The present volume of traffic doesn't require this drastic step. However, if the region has reason to believe that a great amount of traffic is going to be using this route in the future, the way to prepare for it is not to carve a large traffic corridor out of Port Perry, but to make the necessary arrangements in the regional plan so that a bypass can be constructed when the time comes.' - Personally, I believe that another major north-south traffic route can only be redundant. The region and area have plenty of them (continued on page 15) -- PORT PERRY - 'Garbage Collections Dec. 22 - Comercial garbage pick up on Dec. 22 Dec. 23 - North of Queen St. pick up on Dec. 23 Dec. 25 - South of Queen St. pick up on Dec. 24th Dec. 26 - Commercial garbage pick up Dec. 27th All Garbage Must Be At Curb By 8:00 a.m. Dec. 29 - Commercial garbage pick up Dec. 29th Dec. 30 - North side of Queen St. pick up Dec. 30 Jan. 1 - South of Queen St. pick up on Jan. 2nd.'
